So first thing's first, this started out as just a fun mod to do in my spare time, so pics of the process in the beginning have been few. That said, I recently returned from a two-year stay in Haiti (note flag), and have since decided it's time for some more serious modding. As an avid fan of Linux, I bring you: The Tux Files.

Well, the case is steel, and i'm sick of seeing all these aluminum cases that everyone and their dog has, I'm also sick of too many colors, so my thoughts are to:

A: Rather than paint the thing black, show off the steel, by making it into a "brushed" steel.

B: The interior color scheme is blue light with glowing green wires/parts. So when my stuff starts to roll in, we'll get that done too :) Hopefully that will be done the end of the week. I also want to get onto the mainboard and start painting, but I think i'll hold on that until I get the processor/motherboard upgrade i'm working for.

C: I seriously need new fans. The ones I have are ancient. Most likely will go with some clear plexi fans.

D: I want a color gradient going from the steel to the bezel, so that it will match the rest of the system, which will be painted/dyed to match. So a steel to black gradient. I'm just sick of bone.

Other than that, a lot is still in the "perhaps" phase. But that's my plans for now. I also think something fun with those feet might be neat.

    Continued...

Stripping the paint. I wanted a wood-grain look in steel, and the only way I could find to do it was by hand (ugh).

Then after some hard pushing and going from a medium (100-150) grit paper to a very fine (220) I polished up the metal, much much better than the bone.

I still have to finish it, which I was working on when I took a break to come type up this update, I'll have some more up tonight.

Coming along nicely. with the keyboard, is it possible to get labels for the keys, cos then you canpaint them, to get rid of all beige.

    Hi there, nice project!

Could you please resize your pictures as per the rules for the project logs forum? They should be no wider than 640 pixels.

    Thanks.

Well, I was toying with the idea of painting them a light silver, and maybe with a light enough coat the labels would look kind of ghosted *shrug* I might just leave it, I kind of like the black/white contrast. Anything else?

    Update 17October2005

Just a small update today, only had a few hours to work on it, still sanding that freaking lid. Today I put the cathode inverters onto switches and soldered some other stuff :)

    Here's the pics...

Cleaned up the case and hid some more wires, got rid of the inverter that was sitting on the floor by lengthening my cathode wires. I ran out of zip ties, so i'll fix those loose wires later.

    With just the UV on:

And here's an up close of the switches:

So there's the update for today, and as always please leave your feedback.

    Update 18October2005

YES! Finally done with sanding! GOt a nice grain set into the metal, here's the mock-up pics, and I really need to know what you think, and any suggestions you have.

So here's a shot of tux all taped up with no more beige.

A good shot of the grain in the steel.

Okay, now I really need some help on this part, I don't know if I like it enough how it is (I like the contrast a lot), or if I should integrate some black into the rest of the case. I was thinking of perhaps putting some black stripes just down the top corners/edges from front to back OR putting the tux details in black on the top, centered.

If you have any other ideas, please leave them. Project Discussion.

I would really like to know what you think, because I don't know what to do next, if I need black on the cover, so please leave feedback.

I think the silver looks really good, seems to have a nice brushed steel look. I like the contrast too, leave it as is.

I had to shake my head today, someone *******ized tux into selling 8 week management training programs in a window :waah:
