im really looking forward to how this turns out, I think this is one of the most interesting log i've seen and is sure to be incredibly satisfying once your playing on it.

    Some more suggestions :

-Hook up 2 microswitches on the sides of the control box, then you can play Pinball games! Assuming you like pinball and can find some ROMs.....

    -A cup holder! For.....cups....

-Coin slot box thingo's ! I got one of these on Ebay for a mate who was building a MAME cab a while back. We managed to hook it up so that it actually worked when the game flashed "INSERT COIN!". It might be more trouble that its worth but its certainly authentic and is a good way to make some extra cash, especially when everyones blind drunk.
    :D

Do you mean wich kind of connectors I use? It's a PS/2 for the buttons and a serial connector for the trackball, it acts like an normal serial mouse.

He! It's a complete build, everything is done from scratch.

I have plans for doing that on the final CP, just love those pinball games!

Great idea! I have one even greater, I've been thinking of putting av smal refridgerator behind the coin door. With room for a couple of ice cold beer cans! :D

I already have one of these! And plan to hook it up with two microswitches, so you can actually pay for your credits. I will be rich soon :D !

Sure! Just drop me a line next time you're in Norway! :thumb:

    Look, an update!! :hehe:

    Update:

With the the controll panel done I desided to work on the software issue for a while.

After searching the web for an decent frontend for MAME, I fell upon a little gem called MAMEWAH. This little beauty is perect for my project, it can be configured and changed in anny way you wish, and it have the possibility to serve as an frontend for up to 20 other emulators.

This is the programs I'm going to use in the project.

    And now for some screenshots:

This is the MAME "Favorites" screen, here I have gathered the 15-20, all time arcade favorites of mine.
Rest of the games are sorted in different categories like this:
(klick on the links to see a screenshot of the menu)
    Fighters
    Platform
    Driving
    Shooter
    Maze
    Sports
    Wrestling
    Puzle
    Quiz
    Mature

This is how the configurationsmenu in MAMEWAH looks like. Every setting can be changed using the buttons on the controll panel.

This is a musicvideo module. It displays a list of all moviefiles inside a predefined folder.

All the layouts I have used here is downloaded from Screenshotarchive.

    Take care!

    Great Job :thumb:

I also have a Mame cabinet (full size upright), and another in the works. I would strongly recommend you consider using 3DArcade as your front-end. While it takes a bit more time to get it set-up, it is by far the best. The visuals are near perfect. Stroll around, walk up to your favorite machine, throw in a token and you're playing (for hours, and hours).

    Long time no see! :)

Sorry for this extremely long delay, but school and other jobs/projects have been taking up all my time recently. But here is my next translation of my original worklog for you! :thumb:

While waiting for a new load of parts from Ultimarc and a Norwegian supplier of arcade parts, I decided to do some brainstorming around the final look/design of the machine.

I wanted to give it a "superhero look", since that is one of the things that took up most of my time during the 80's. I plan to use a projector to project black/white versions of the figures onto the cabinet, then i can easily draw up the lines and afterwards fill in the colours, using hobby paint.

Once again, this is just a quick mock up, NOT the final design. In the end I plan to not use that many figures, maybe just one on each side.

Anyway, here are the pictures for this round!

As I said earlier, superheroes are the keyword here!
On the right side you can meet Batman, Superman and Flash.

On the left we have Spiderman, Captain America and Wonderwoman. I later found a better home for Spiderman on the front of the machine.

    Spiderman posing :hehe:
The bezel (image around the screen) is taken from the cool Captain America arcade machine. I’m not going to use this in the final project, I will make my own design here, just as the Marquee (the logo on top of the machine)

Close-up of the control panel and the screen. I have fired up a round of "Captain America & the Avengers", a great game! :D

The Marquee design is not final, I will work on that later on.

After a couple of days the goods arrived, in some BIG boxes! :naughty:

This was the gem of the shipment, an authentic and NEW 21" arcademonitor from the Italian company Intervideo. On the paper it has a low resolution and a refresh rate of just 15Hz. But combined with a ArcadeVGA card from Ultimarc you get a really authentic and "real" picture. Every detail and colour in the picture looks brighter and crisper, you have to keep in mind that the games was originally designed for these kind monitors.

On the back of the monitor you can find a little control panel where you can adjust colour and brightness, but also the H and V sync.

This is a old coin door from a pinball table, but it fits my needs so I will use it in this project.

This is what’s left of the coin-reception mechanism, not much to brag about, but I will do my best to get it to work again.

This is the 16mm T-list I will be using on the edges of the cabinet, to give it an nice rounded feeling and a authentic look.

This is the ArcadeVGA card i ordered from Ultimarc. It’s based on the ATI Radeon 9200 chipset, with 128 Mb RAM. As I mentioned earlier is it designed with arcade monitors and their special resolution and r4efresh rate in mind, its just to hook it up.

The wiring of the card is simple enough: V-sync, H-sync, and the colours Red Green and Blue

While ordering stuff from Ultimarc I couldn't help, but to order a couple of these beauties, maybe I will use them instead of the boring ones I first ordered! :)

These next two pictures is just to show you how I planed cut the two big MDF wallboards, had to be sure that there was room for all parts before I started cutting. As you can tell, there was not much left when done!

That’s it for now folks, hopefully I will manage to do the next update during next week (I have some time off! )

since its obvious that you will be playing this for hours on end, why not make a wireless/corded secondary keypad so that you can sit in your couch and play instead of standing in front of the machine? That would be awesome, you could make it wireless with an IR remote unit, or maybe bluetooth.

THIS IS SAWEET!!! All of a sudden all of these MAME machines are popping up on Bit-Tech....well this is yet another awesome project. I do have some questions about the roms though. On my MAME machine that i am building i can't get some of the roms to work. Such as the following: Any of the Tekkans, and of the Metal Slugs.....and a bunch more...but those are the main ones that i would like to get to work. So i was just wondering if you could get those to work on your machine?

<by the way i am using Game Launch as my frontend>

Really nice, but is that at crack in the wood between 2 buttons?
Probably just some gay-ass wood with a darker spot just right there?

That's a great idea, but I think the monitor is a bit too small for this to work well. I have a similar idea for a future project, I plan to make a wireless control panel that can be used on my HTPC with a projector, that would have been cool! :D

Are you completely sure that this is a MAME cabinet, can you choose from over 2000 games in a menu. Or can you just play one game?
The reason for my question is that in a MAME cabinet there is no special chipset or chips with roms. MAME (Multipel Arcade Machine Emulator) is, as the name tells us, an emulator running on a normal computer, emulating the old chipsets.

So, after we have sorted this out I'll be glad to help you further!

    Thanks allot!
Of course you have to do one of each! :D
    - I will!

Those games runs flawlessly on my machine.
Which build of MAME do you use, andwhich rompack do you have?
The games wil sometimes not work if you use an old build of MAME or have old, buggy roms.

Takk for det gode nabo! :)

That's my first test-controlpanel, it's just a quick mock up to try out my initial design. I will change the weak and splintery pinewood with some heavy duty MDF later on!

Keep on posting guys, and expect an update tomorrow!

Check out the great MAME-games database MAWS there you'll find complete info on all of the 2942 original games MAME supports at this moment.

i use MAME .88b but i have also used MAME .77b....i tried the roms with both of them....and neither of them work, the rom set is for .81.

I REALLY want to get these games to work because they are a couple of my favoirte games EVER!!! If you happen to have MAME v.81 then it would be cool if you could post it on your website or something so that i could download it...or even if you could post the roms for these games on your website.
    THANKS!!!
