sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet  I'm trying to work out if the boss will let me bring one of these to work. "No really, it's a executive stress toy"
WOW!!! Thaks for all the overwhelming comments people, keep em comming! - Keeps a modders heart warm! I think I mentioned something about this earlier in the thread, and I think that posted a picture like this: As you can tell, I have a little hang up on 80's superheroes! The final design will not include as many heroes as this mock-up, I will give it a cleaner look, fewer, but bigger. Thanks! It IS extremly satisfying doing a project like this, I can asure you. I know I'm building something that will last "forever", I will NEVER get tired of playing this games over and over again. And since they allready are old, you can be sure that they won't get old and forgotten again, not by me at least!
I love the way this thing is comming out. It just seems pointless to build these things if your not going to take the time to make them nice. Is like whats the point, just run mame off your pc with an arcade control if your your not going to give a crap. There are way way to many "me to" cabs that are just thrown together with little effort. This clearly doesnt fall into that catagory. Youve put alot of time and planning into this project and it shows. My hats off to you. It kinda looks like you grabbed it from an arcade imho. Very sweet. Now when all your mates see it they will be like whoa sweet build me one!
this is really coming along wonderfully. i've been waiting to do so modding after some great "inspiration" and this would be it. of course when i start on this, i will be at an advantage. a buddy of mine told me he can get me an old cabinet *knock on wood*, so i'll just have to build the computer and configure everything. i've always wanted a mame. of course i'll have to mod the cabinet for a keyboard and the switches but this is not just a great mod, it's a great tutorial w/ everything step by step and very informative. GREAT work man! absolutely authentic looking. you should put some plexi over the buttons and joysticks to make it a bit more authentic.
This trully is a labour of love and can't wait for the finished project. The skills shown so far are awesome. Keep up the great work
Hey, looks great so far. You should consider selling these.. Looking forward to the next update. Where in Norway are you located, by the way?
Good idea, I will look into it later! But for now I will just paint it black and decorate it with a thick red and a blue diagonal stripe. He! He! Maybe, but it would have been a full time job! I live in central Oslo. Another UPDATE: This is the lover part of the back of the cabinet. In the little square hole the IO-panel will be located, with the main switch and contacts for network, mains and audio, if you want to use an extern amplifier. This is the back panel with mains connector and the main switch, I will add the rest of the contacts later on. Backside of the panel, one cable plugs into the PSU and one connects to the relè-switchingbox. This is how i sectioned the whole back section of the cabinet, two doors with a stabilising section in the middle, this ensures easy access and great stability. Magnets keeping the doors closed. On this peace of chipboard I have mounted all the computer hardware, mainboard on the upper side with PSU and Harddrive hanging underneath. This bard will be mounted in the bottom of the cabinet, with the I/O ports on the MB reachable trough the lower door. This is shot shows how I run have run the cables from the light and the speakers nicely along the corners of the cab, I want order! Next victim on my list was the coin-door that was in desperate need of a little brush-up. Started off by disassemble the door and sanding all the metal parts. Then I coated them in three layers of black spray-paint. New bulbs to illuminate the two coin-slots, connected directly to 12V from the PSU. Mounted inside the coin-slot mechanism. The mechanism mounted in the door. And.... It was light! I will put two labels showing which coins that are accepted, in front of the lightning. This is how the completed door is clamped to the cabinet. Then I focused my work on finishing the control panel. My first test drilling, it seemed to work really well with the wood spade and the MDF, no splintering. All the holes are finished, I did some minor adjustments compared to the first test panel I made. I added a little, but really entertaining, new feature to the panel. Two side/flipper-buttons, combined with the great features of Virtual Pinball, it really gives you a thrill! After finishing the woodwork on the controlpanel, I added all the parts together, wired up all the buttons and hardware again and...... ...fired up a round of "Metal Slug X", it was sooooo fun, I couldn't get myself to leave the machine for the next couple of days! Yet another shot of the finished cab, this time with flash! This is the design I came up with for the marquee, it is based upon the great MAME marquee designed by "C.G." over at OscarControls.com. I got it printed out on special lightsign paper at a local printshop. It's sandwiched between two sheets of plexi and the mounted in front of the light. SOFTWARE I know I wrote a little about this topic earlier in the thread, but I felt I had to add a couple of details! I use special "hacks" of the emulators mentioned in the list beneath, that uses the "esc" key to exit (same as when in a game in MAME), but don't have the proper links to those right now. OS: -I'm running a tuned/tweaked version of XP, don't need all that extra crap! Frontend: -MAMEWAH this great peace of software is the link between all the emulators, it's the heart of the system! Emulators: MAME: - To get the most out of MAME i run a version optimized for the AMD XP CPU (impatiently waiting for the 64 bit version!) NES: - FCE Ultra v0.97 SNES: - Zsnesw v1.36 SEGA Genesis: - Gens v2.11 SEGA Master: - Meka v0.65b That completes this update, next on my agenda is painting and decorating the machine. - Have to leave you now, some 100 games waiting to be finished!!!!! Take Care! - Audun
no need to paint it all. you could just get a HUGE print out on vinyl of some graphics. that would look REALLY authentic. instead of painting a vinyl print out would look GREAT! i really adore your work and i commend you. absolutely fabulous. lots of attention to detail. i love it!
Absolutely fantastic. /me wants. If you ever get bored of it, I'll quite gladly take it off your hands for you I can't wait to see it finished.
YES, it have been asked before, a couple of times actually! I am going to paint it black, but decorate the exterior with some nice sideart and colours, just like I have shown in this picture a couple of times before! That's a good idea, but I'm afraid it's a little too expensive for me. And I also love the idea of doing EVERYTHING myself, that's the "modding spirit"! - Will have the next update up and running some time during this week, hang on! - Audun
serriøst!!! Hva er adressen din? er NØDT til å prøve den greia når den er ferdig!!!!!!! F*****G AMAZING!!
can't wait to see it! oh, btw, what "cheats" did you use? and how'd you "tweak" your XP? did you just shut off certain services from starting? and one last question, where do you get it from? i just ordered all my roms from freemameroms.com
wow! i have been following your poasts and you have inspired me to make a mame cab i have been searching on the internet for dimensions and i cant seem to find any. i was wondering if you could send me the demensions of your cabinet if not that is still cool and i respect the fact that you dont want people to steel your ideas any hoo you are awsom and i realy liked your cabinet Uno
I Can not belive i have missed this, i must be going blind, How cool is that everyone, It has to be said the workmanship is first class. Yeeeehaaa.[Edit] Looking at the fact that everyone seems to like mame i have made a couple of MAME screensavers if anyone wants them, they are in a winrar folder so you will need winrar to open them,. They are not brilliant but it is a start, they are in exe format and can be uninstalled from add/remove programmes. The site i have them on does not allow much bandwidth so if you can't get them keep trying. Hope you like em. http://home.ripway.com/2004-11/206752/screensavers.rar
have a look here http://www.arcadecontrols.com/ the most comprehensive site on the subject of building this kind of thing. the forums there are worth a look too. the great thing about building your own mame cab is that you can build it to the exact size and shape that suits you and your house. there is no right and wrong size for a diy cab and ferox, nice finished (well almost) product very pro looking, good job
If I ever get the money I'm building my own one of those. I've gotta go play some of those old school games now.
