Thankfully the CD-ROM came with a separate control board, so I took a piece of plexi and mounted the board on it..it was then stuck between the 5.25" drive bay and the right case panel.

It's gonna function as a motorized front bay door which lifts up the modders mesh and reveal the plexi layer underneath

I love the idea of using the tray of a rom-drive to motorize the front bay. Very creative. Don't think I've seen one of those before. :)

    thanks guys,

basically the idea is that the plexi below will also serve as a "rail" so that the mesh doesn't wobble or get ripped out by accident (almost happened - the cleaning lady decided to do some modding of her own :D )

Whats nice about CD-Rom drives is that they're pre-designed for getting stuck and other mishaps...if the door catches on something the motor will stop and eventually give up after a while, resetting itself.
I haven't checked this, but If I connect an IDE cable I might see this as a drive in windows..enabling me to do all kinds of nice stuff like use a remote control on it..:)

    More pics SOON

This is really weird, when you get that motorized front working, you have to make a video of it for us to see. At least you are changing the front of that case though, because stock, it's ugly. =x I'll be looking forward to seeing the rest of this come together and see what you have planned for the bottom part of the front. So keep us updated, and good luck.

The nice thing about Crystalfontz (except their professionality, A+ service and great product) is that they provide a 1:1 diagram of the cuircuit board for your printing pleasure.

Thats one of the reasons I chose to trash it...we don't want any of that cheap plastic... :dremel:

I've painted it silver so its much less obvious...my goal is to preserve the transparent look of the mesh so light can be seen coming from underneath, so this is the best compromise AFAIK...
