A friend from Germany just sent me link to a webshop where a Benq projector (MP512ST) is offered for a pretty low price http://www.alternate.de/html/product/details.html?artno=EE%23B67
It's sold for roughly 308 pounds (=389 Euros) only but has nice features. Especially for gamers it seems to be a nice deal, as far as I can judge from the product details (pretty bright with 2200 ANSI lumen, SVGA, Wii, PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 compatible). It also includes short-throw technology which means the projector can be placed very close to the wall and still shows a large picture (110 inch screen size @ 2m distance from the wall).

I haven't found this projector in UK webshops yet, but hopefully soon to come. Anyway, this offer seems to be too good to be true, as soon as it will be available here, I'm gonna take a look.

We're looking into reviewing it, no promises yet though.

So, it lists the native resolution as 800x600, but the maximum resolution as an acceptable 1280x1024. Is there some sort of IQ degradation at the maximum res? Or else if it can technially display 1280x1024, why wouldn't that be the native resolution?

800x600 native should be fairly nice... anything higher than that still seems to be pretty pricey. 110" at 2m is pretty impressive. We had to Take our HD80 back to 6m for a 126" image, even if at full zoom.

Brightness is nice, but room lighting control trumps brightness every time. Remeber, the brighter the lamp is set, the lower the contrast ratio.

i have a dell 3400MP with native of 1024x768, on ebay for about £400.

I would NOT want anything lower than that, 800x600 for £310 is a waste of money IMHO, i would honestly spend the extra and get a MINIMUM of 1024x768.

Mine does 1400x1050 interpolated, but its rubbish, and for games, is a waste of horsepower, as your PC is grinding away at that high resolution, then the projector downscales it back to native (albeit with the apprent "look" of the higher res.).

Don't scrimp, and you wont be disappointed, projectors are AMAZING< and a really good one that does 1280x720 (720p native widescreen) would be the bare minimum i'd want in place of what i have.

Bought the Benq MP512 meanwhile ...

Ok, I bought it. I have been using it for several days now and can share some experiences about it now:
    - picture quality is ok
    - playing Wii on the projector is fun
    - for watching DVDs the picture quality is not optimized
    - short-throw technology is pretty useful in my small rooms

I think it is a good entry-level projector. 800x600 resolution is good for playing games but not that great for watching movies.
Besides, it looks cool, it differs from the standard black office projectors and fits more into the household because of nice color and round and designed shapes. BUT: using a projector can make addicted...maybe I have to upgrade soon... I just saw that the W5000 from Benq got great reviews...
