maybe get an external USB 1TB first and see if it works, if not then return it. or cant you do that?

do you need 1TB for the system HDD because supposedly you can only assign either 10gb for the system or 10gb for the OS. So unless you want just 10gb for your PS3 and you may aswell use a 750gb for the system HDD.

Be mindful of the PS3's limitations.
    1. Linux runs under a hypervisor (like a VM) and access to the graphics hardware has been restricted by Sony. You will get 2D rendering on the framebuffer, but you do not have access to 3D acceleration from the RSX GPU.
    2. HDMI output is encrypted with HDCP. Unless your TV/TFT/CRT monitor is HDCP-compliant you will get nothing but a black screen and you will have to use composite (RCA) output which is limited to a 576x384 resolution.
    3. The biggest limitation of the PS3, however, is memory. You only have 212MB of RAM so running KDE or GNOME will probably make things 'sluggish' as any apps you use will most likely have to resort to swap space.

Whilst I never found the performance an issue ( about the same speed running apps as an eeePC due to memory limitations) this is about to be helped along with Yellow Dog 6.1

This will allow you to use GPU RAM as swap area
