Can you imagine it!! You cant lend your mates your games, cant sell your games and if your console dies then you have to buy ALL your games again.

Wow, just wow. I cant see Sony doing it though, not without their sales plummeting considering how many PS2 games there are in places like Game.

That's awful. How many PS2s have I been through? I can't see them implementing it. They hold loads of patents for stuff that never sees the light of day.

There is no way they are gonna put that in PS3, they would ultimately be shooting themselves in the foot.

I'm v surprised that Sony have even gone down this road tbh considering just how 'open' their PSP games are. They lack any kind of DRM or region coding which imo is the way forward!

    Hahahahahahahahaha...

    ...hahahahahaha.

Are they serious? At least it's only rumours at the moment that it will feature on the PS3. I hope not. It could be for their blu-ray discs? Or something further down the line...

One of the biggest problems with this "concept" is that they would not be able to rent games. Video game rental is a pretty big industry, and I don't think it's going to happen.

Some PSP games require specific firmwares though, like Liberty City requires 2.0 and most people are running 1.5 for obvious reasons.

Why is it for every cool idea Sony have they come up with something really boneheaded? First of all the details about possible region free games on the PS3 sounded awesome. Then they follow it up with this.

They've done the same with the PSP in my opinion, where lots of the really cool features and potentially attractive facilities come with restrictions that undermine those original good ideas and thoughts.

I can't decide whether to believe this information or not considering how relatively close it is to launch (late 2006). I'm sure it can't be an easy feature to implement at the last minute...

What if the rented game was only playable with some sort of smart card/memory card inserted into the PS3?

Mookboy, what you say, really makes sense about only registering the patent so close to the ps3 release. I'm guessing its not true.

That is true however it is nowhere near as restrictive as the new patent and it is in place to stop piracy and people playing homebrew- IMO i don't mind that Sony have taken this step to combat piracy, so long as I can still play my games when and where i want in any PSP what I want. My first PSP had some dead pixels so I got Sony to replace it, if this new security measure was in place then all the games i played on my old PSP would have to be rebought (apart from metal gear acid as it sucks) which is totally wrong.

I dont know. It only takes a little bit of BIOS code to read an auth code, then afaik no games manuf. have actually made games on bluray yet, so that could still be included and a small update to the bluray drives in the PS3s are all it takes. It's a months work, tops.

True. If the PSP can be so easily patched, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to do exactly the same thing for the PS3, months down the line with each new game carrying the same autoupdate a la stuff like GTA:LCS on the PSP.

I really hope this isn't true,

i dont think it matters if they do it anyway does it? some clever person will end up hacking it or there will be a mod chip that comes out that will probably stop it.

Certainly not soon after they release them. They've gotta work with new cell processors and then try to work out the copy protection. It will happen but not soon after the PS3 is released.

I think if sony were to include it there will be an uproar in games shops and video/games rental stores first though.

But didn't Microsoft want to do the very same sort of thing with Windows? Has anything ever come of that?

As a side note, it's interesting that in the week that Sony is in the tech news because of dubious, sly copy protection code on their audio CDs, this comes out. It never rains etc...

Personally I feel this isn't true, if anything the technology will be used for sending out pre-release betas, review copies etc.

If however it does turn out to be true then it completely steps all over the praise I gave Sony in this thread. Not only that but they'll give mod-chip manufacturers another legitimate legal argument "Your Honour, our product only allows little Johnny to swap his games that he paid for with his weekly allowance".

If the unlikely does happen and they implement this technology in all games, the only way I'm buying a PS3 is if they provide me with a lifetime warranty so my games will never be rendered useless.

EDIT:I thought the drives and discs used are ROM? How does this remove any 'code' from from the disc?

Make one tiny section of the disk so fickle that when a normal laser is fired at it it degrades, erroding the authcode.
