Eurogamer had a very interesting article on the how the PS3 is uniquely placed to pioneer 3D gaming. The PS3's hardware and Sony's television expertise mean the PS3 could have the ability to play all games in true 3D by next year, potentially years before its competitors. Well worth a read of the article.
I can see that 3D gaming is being pushed by Nvidia and PS3, very good news. I've tried playing games on my PC with a software driver which converted the games into "3D", you had to use the red/blue glasses. Of course the colour was off as a result of using glasses with 2 different tints on them. However the effect was quite astounding, playing an FPS and having the gun stick out into your face, or racing a car and have the steering wheel and cockpit surround is quite surreal. This is something I've been waiting for the day I started gaming.
My company (Blitz) just released Invincible Tiger on XBLA & PSN. World's first digital 3D game. Go check it out http://www.invincibletiger.com/ 3D gaming is definitely going to be defacto in the next few years.
That appears to be the main benefit of Sony's implementation, it doesn't have a huge hit on frame rate. I hate to say it but if it really was good i would be tempted to buy a new TV.
The problem is that the PS3, no matter how much Sony like to compare it to a PC, is a console. Even if it could pull off stereoscopic 3D it'll only ever be used as a gimmick, just like the Wii's motion sensing.
The wii is a gimmick which has out sold every other console, no hardware manufacturer would want to miss that kind of opportunity. If they can implement 3D well i could see it being a logical evolution of what we currently have. GT 5 supports head tracking and that combined with 3D would make the game much more immersive. If you read the article the journalists who have tried it have been impressed.
Hell yeah I've tried it! It's amazing! At the moment it's used in a very novel way, but that's understandable really. Developers want to hook people with nice looking stuff before incorporating it into real game mechanics. Unfortunately, something like < 2% of TV owners actually have 3D capable TVs...... so it's far too early really. Everyone's forced to use anaglyph which is pretty weak compared to the really nice stereoscopic effect. I do know though that we struggled to get it running at 60fps (pretty much the minimum required).
There are 3D tv's on the market?? I will have a look then I drooling over a ultra thin LED TV. Now im going to have to drool over a 3D TV instead
The super thin TV's compromise picture quality to get that thin as they use edge lighting which compromises your back lighting and contrast.
I've used '3D' gaming in the past... My old GeForce 4 Ti 4400 came with a set of 3D glasses back in the day. While the experience was interesting, it was a bit gimmicky. Granted, this was also 7 years ago, so I'm sure the experience could have changed.
3D was a bolt-on then. Games didn't really support it. Graphics cards just (I assume) did some generic algorithm using the depth information in a render frame. Now it's being implemented and designed properly.
