Probably since the GPU has to produce that extra little bit of pixels. But unless you have a very low end GPU I doubt it would make any noticeable difference whatsoever.

Here's another question. I've read through most of this thread, but not all, so I hope this wasn't posted. I am thinking about doing this mod in the future and I was wondering, if you did the car adapter to PSU trick, how difficult would it be to wire a switch/button to mount that would turn the monitor on and off? I've never messed with creating switches or buttons so I really don't know how to make/wire one. Thanks.

Very easy, I have done that! All you need to do is cut the positve of the psone car adaptor and connect it to a switch, and you're done!

Thanks! Well that sounds easy enough. Is doing that bad for the screen at all?

    using cables

I have just got a new Psone lcd and want to connect it up just using cables.
So I plugged in the power supply and connected a lead with a 3.5mm jack to 3 phonos.I used the yellow one on a s video converter(that I got with my graphics card) and plugged it into the s video socket on the graphics card.
I have nothing on the screen.I have gone into display but it does not recognize the connection as I am not able to select another display.
I have a Sapphire radeon 9500pro the s video socket has 9 pins ,so does the s video converter.

Anyone have an idea whats wrong.

    Thanx

Assuming you dont use the horrid CCC, go to Display Propertied -> Settings -> Advanced -> Displays. Then turn on the "TV".

    What is ccc.
Can't turn tv on .Its as if there is no connection.
I connected the psone to a dvd player using the yellow phono and the screen had lines on it so the psone must be ok.
Im wondering if the 9 pin svideo needs to be converted to a 4 pin svideo.

    Hey all,

Thanks for all the info on how to get this mod working. I have my PSone LCD hooked up to my S-vid out on my 7600 GT. I also came up with a cheaper way of hooking up the composite input.

Instead of buying one of those AV 3.5mm -> 3x RCA cables, you can just get a regular RCA cable and solder it to the pins on the connector.

If you are look at the 3.5mm jack, it has 4 pins coming out of it. The two pins you need are the first ones on the right side.

    An illustration:
    Code:
       ___
      | | 3
      | |
      | | 2
    4 |___| 1
        - Normal AV input

    1 - Ground
    2 - Composite Input
3 & 4 - Used for right and left audio

If you connect the shielded part of an RCA cable to 1, and connect the center pin to 2, voila, you have a signal!

Now another thing I'm going to make is a 12V -> 7.5V voltage regulator. I can't be bothered buying one of the car adapters and I could make one for only a few bucks. I'll let you all know when I put it all together and how it works out.

If anyone else is curious, look up the LM350 voltage regulator chip. You can find some PDFs out there telling you how to make the circuit, but make sure you adjust it so it outputs 7.5V :thumb:

I have been tinkering around with my LCD. I can't get the VGA mod to work. Should the LCD at least light up when you plug in the power supply if there is nothing else connected to it? When I plug in the power cord, nothing happens

If it's PAL, connect the dcc pin. I forget which it is and I'm too hung over to find out for you, but the answer's in this thread somewhere

    Welcome BTW, good luck :)

I have already connected the dcc. I'm pretty sure the answer is somewhere in here, but I reeeeeaaaaaally don't feel like sifting through 50 pages, ha ha. Oh, and it is PAL by the way.

I've made my voltage regulator and made it so I only have one board external to the LCD board instead of the two. Check out the pic:

If you want to make your own voltage regulator instead of buying the car adapter, follow this schematic:

NOTE: R2 in the schematic is a potentiometer (variable resistor). In my set up I was able to use a 1.2k Ohm resistor in its place to get the 7.5V the LCD needs. If you replace R2 with a 1.2k resistor, please ensure you have 7.5V running between your Vout and ground before hooking up your LCD.

A bit more info: The LCD only draws about 500mA of current when running, but does require more to start up.

I'm running off of an LM317 voltage regulator which is rated for 1.5A. Using either a LM350 (rated 3A) or LM150 (rated 6A) would be advised as my chip gets hot even with the little heatsinks (70 degrees C). The LM350 and LM150 use the exact same schematic, and will run cooler than an LM317.

Again, thanks for the help guys, and I hope this helps others out as well.

anyone have any pics of what they did with this in their comp? I was going to make this awhile back when the PSone screens were $13 a pop, but sold them since I thought it would take too long, and I didn't have the right case for it

all those video options looked too hard to deal with as well, but the thought of the mod is pretty cool

I am trying to mod the LCD, but now the LCD's backlight would not turn on. I can still see very dark images on the screen, so the LCD is still working but no backlight. I think I turned the screen down and that caused the backlight to go out. Is there anyway to turn it back on? Thanks.

Go into powerstrip and turn off tiling.

Or turn on tiling. I forget which.

I'm just wanting to make sure that this is right.

When you do the 24lc21 mod, does this mean that the screen will no longer require powerstrip to be running?

I currently run the Sony lcd of a matrox G200 card. I'm stripping out the operating system of any unneccessary processes and would rather not have powerstrip running all of the time.

    @justblair:
That's right. Once the EEPROM is installed and correctly programmed with the EDID powerstrip is no longer required at all. I haven't run it for months!
