Well I've just left down my desktop to the local pc store where I bought my parts to get tested and the guy said he was pretty certain it was the PSU so theres a chance I'll more than likely be buying a new psu so some advice would be brilliant. I've currently got a FSP everest 1010w ( probably abit of overkill). what PSU would you recomend from PCworld(yea i know pc world are crap but i can get it today), Scan or mplex.com.The other sites usually charge me a surcharge (Northern ireland surcharge sucks) running: i730 at stock gigabyte ga-x58-usb3 1 sata dvd-rw 2 1tb HDD ati 4850 ( soon to be gtx570). Budget is max £139.
Firstly, what was the original problem? The techy might not be right (all too often, small computer shops...don't have a clue what they are talking about). Not saying that the guy doesn't, but just in case. If it is the power supply, you won't really need anything more than a good 450W or so if you're going to be sticking with the single card setup, and around 600W+ if you're looking at anything more than that.
the system was randomly powering off out of the blue for no reason. I ran memtest everything passed, ran intel burn test for an hour at max settings and it was fine, check the gpu with ati tools and it was grand checked the HDD's. only thing left that it could be is the mobo or PSU (process of elimination and all that) I'll be upgrading to a gtx 480 or gtx 570 in a few weeks so I need to be able to power that and have room to spare for a 2nd in about 6 months as im upgrading to a higher res screen. the shop isnt too small its got 4 stores around northern Ireland so its no the biggest but its not a little tiny indy store.
Well I went to pcworld.co.uk and I couldn't see any Cooler Masters, I tried finding a Northern Ireland website, but no success. So if you want the best recommendation from pcworld then I think a link would come in handy.
"the system was randomly powering off out of the blue for no reason." Have you asked them to check if there was a short? Also, which CM PSU's are PCW selling? What's your budget? I appreciate you want a new PSU asap, but it's an important component so worth some patience to get right.
Corsair hx750 @ pcworld Well the system is down at the store atm still. The guy in the store doesnt seem to know whats causing it, he's reinstalled windows and it seems to have fixed the problem, tho i installed it 4 times over the past week and it kept randomly powering off and giving me the message "The system failed to boot due to overclocking settings or voltage issues" even tho I've not overclocked the system so he's going to keep a hold of it for a few days. its not a short as I've double and tripple checked that its not a short. budget is around £130
They seem to stock some OCZ, Corsair and Antec power supplies, any of which should be good. If you're willing to spend over £100 the HX 750 is excellent, but you don't really need more than 500-600W max.
Even if he SLi's two 570s? I have noticed of late that PCW are starting to stock a few more up market components, but sorry, their prices are shocking... http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/arctic-cooling-freezer-7-pro-rev-2-cpu-cooler-92mm-07929954-pdt.html
Yeah, the prices are a bit OTT. If the OP wants to go for SLI at some point then yeah, 750-850W would be a better bet.
definitely. sli'd 580's will run on an average system with a quality 500 watt psu(if you can find one with the proper connectors lol). but headroom would be nice, absolutely
assuming you have an average system, 2-4 opticals/hdd, nothing out of the ordinary for cooling...absolutely
