Hi there im building a SFF pc and going to be using a psu thats 100% modular cables. What im wanting to no is whats the best way to make the cables shorter? Im guessing just cutting a bit out of the middle of the cable and then joining the 2 ends back togther is not the best way? Also i will be removing plugs i dont need. ie: the xtra sata plugs on the cable i will use for dvd drive and also on the cable for the hdds. I have seen Silverstone have a short cables kit for SFF builds that can be used on there PSU's but no shops have then where i am. Do any other PSU makers have cable kits you can buy with out the psu? would like to leave the stock cables that i get with the psu as is and mod a 2nd set to short cables. Thanks
i asked some similar (almost) questions, just in case you missed the answers, heres the link. http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=163481 as far as cable kits go, i don't know. But i hope the link helped any other curiositys.. were you planning on making your second set of shorter cables from scratch?
To make current cables short I'd take the connectors off and cut the ends off where you want then put new pins and connectors on. As far as having a second set it depends on what PSU you are using. What do you have? For my Silverstone PSU I can buy a spare set of their site. I would only buy an extra set from the manufacturer.
Thanks looking there now. And yeh make a set of shorter cables by modding a 2nd set of cables if i can get a set.
Hi thanks. I have no PSU at moment but looking. Have been looking at the silverstone ones to go with me silverstone case. wanting 100% modular cables, and round 650w to 750w. What model do you have? been looking at the SilverStone Decathlon series DA750 750W are the Silverstone Strider ST75F (750 Watts). Also where is the Silverstone shop? Link? Thanks. Also forgot to say I will be slevving the cables and installing T-sata plugs if thay are not T-sata plugs
I have the Silverstone Strider ST75F. Heres the link to the cables you can get from Silverstone. http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=pp03&area=usa Not sure where you can buy them though. But it seems they are very short. But by looking at my PSU the connectors on the PSU itself seem to be standard sizes which would mean you could buy your own wire and make your own set of cables and pack away the originals.
Yeh seen that page on there site. Thanks Try so the plugs that go into the PSU end are the same as the ends that plug into the mobo and that. Any one tryed it? If so i could just buy a PSU and then buy a 2nd one cheap or a stuffed psu and use the cables off it to mod them or make my own? Silverstone Strider ST75F
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/Silv...cement-Cable-Set-for-Strider-ST60-75-85F-PSUs Says thay are in stock but alot of sites say that and never do. Dont think thay ship to NZ (New Zealand) Any one got any ideas?
Yeah, you could either salvage cables & connectors from some stuffed psu's, you might be able to score some good quality cabling from dud units at pc shops, recyclers, etc Or you can just buy new cable & plugs from an electronics shop, like digikey or maplin or whatever. This way you don't have to cut & join or pop out pins from connectors, which is the cleanest but most expensive option. Just keep in mind that cheap psu's tend to have cheap thin connector pins & thin wire, which are fine for hdd's and other low power stuff, but any high powered device like a big gfx card or a ballsy mobo combination will have a little bit of a voltage drop from the resistance, and if the metal is really thin, you'll have not just a bigger voltage drop but the wires & connector can also get hot!
it seems as tho they are the same. Only one I wonder about is the 10pin sata plug. not sure if you can get 10pin connectors anywhere. The rest looks like it'd be the same. Id get it and then just compare the other ends to each other. AC Ryan has connectors and pins. They seem very good. For sleeving I think TechFlex is the best. If you can verify that the connectors on the PSU are the regular standard ones I would suggest buying wire, connectors and pins so you can make your own cables the exact length you want. The manual for the Silverstone PSU lists the gauges and colors all the wires are for each cable.
hay thanks man i have just ordered the Silverstone DA750 750W Modular PSU: http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/p_contents.php?pno=da750&area= Was going to get the 650w but the 750w was on sale and was the same cost of the 650w. More power and quad PCI-E 6 pin connectors. Also got a email from Silverstone saying no cables and that i will have to just make my own or try get another lot of cables.
Looks like there isnt a 10pin connector on that one. You Probably will be able to buy wire and connectors and make your own. Only ones I wonder about are those two connectors on the right side. They look like they are 5 pin. You might have to use the original ones for those connectors but the rest you should be able to make your own. But as I said. Check it out (once you get the PSU) and make sure the connectors are infact the same before ordering wire and connectors and find out its a waste of money.
did you get this today?! please take a pic of the modular cable ends for me like in my help thread! millions of rep for you if you do!
got it yet? sorry to bug you, but its urgent! also, you wont be disappointed, the build quiality is fantastic
