My Corsair 750w PS has too much wire for my current case. So I'm wanting to modular things up a bit. First on the list are the four 6+2 PCI E connectors. I will be ordering a single card soon, but have no use for 4 connectors... yet anyway. So I'm asking you for your thoughts. The two options that come to mind are:

    1) Get 4 male PCI E connectors (black)& 4 female PCI E connectors (black). With some heatshrink the sleeved goodness stays and it's modular. Just leave the male connectors hanging on short length of cable.

    2) Run the cables into something in a 5 1/4 bay... like an old CD rom. Put jacks on that and connect as needed. This one would be nice if I used the 6-pin screw connectors and made a lighted ring around them. Does anyone know how to make a connection light up only if something is actually connected? The connectors are like this

I would do the first one, but have the connectors attached to the case.

You could let the connectors light up by running the current through a part of the plug. Not connected = no light :)
However, you'd want to use an isolated bit of that plug, or you'll disrupt virtually everything. You could find an isolated bit or make your own if you cant find one.

Alternatively, you could use a momentary switch. Connect the cable, and it's pressed down, completing the circuit and you have light. Disconnect and the switch falls back in original position, lights out.

to go for the ring to only light up when connected you need to find plugs with two more connectors than the cable can supply. then when its plugged into te socket make a link from the two unused connectors to conduct to each other, (dont know if you get this) the rest is basically just making the ring light up!

Put them in a stealth cover or false floor? Or something like the second idea and do a box in a drive bay? BTW First vote counts twice! So it's 50/50

That is perfect answer for the round connectors. There are 8 pin available, so use 6 for the PCIE and just link two together. The switch would work if drilled into the panel mount half.

Guys thanks for the posts! I was stuck and knew it so posted up and got the help needed. Now to decide the method.

I meant the PSU case, but yeah a false wall sounds like a good idea, you could make it into a case mod.

The Orac project did something a bit like your 5 1/4 bay idea where power was run to a seperate box that then distributed it to the system.

I like the idea voted above where instead of doing a separate junction box, you build it into the existing power supply for a the false wall effect.
