Some of you may have seen my thread about my what choice of CPU to go for, well, I finally went for the i7 860. So far my kit is: CPU - i7 860 Motherboard - Asus P7P55D Deluxe HD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB x 4 (this also may increase as time goes on) Case - Antec 1200 I need to decide on a PSU. I would like to go for something that is going to be more than capable to handle my system and also have some spare capacity for the future. This is my first build, so have little experience, so don't know if this will have any bearing on the choice (ie how easy it is to setup etc? don't know if this will come into it) At the moment I am also looking at although haven't bought yet: GPU - ATi 5850 or 5870 (at the moment only one of these, but will possibly get a second one) Still got to decide on memory. Haven't decided on a cooler yet. Blu Ray burner of some description DVD burner Also.... I'd like to keep the system as quiet as possible. I've not really put a budget on the PSU and other bits, but want to see what the possibilities are then go from there.
Corsair HX750. Or the HX650 if you want something at a lower price point. Those both offer some upgrade room, as you shouldn't need more than a decent 500W PSU with that kit.
And Corsair is regarded as good kit? As I said all new to this, so advice from everyone is really appreciated. So 750W would be more than sufficient?
The Corsair is the PSU of choice for me, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the reviews on them are excellent (although there are a number of PSU's around with excellent reviews).. but the crucial, decision winning ‘vote’ for me was\is the 7 year warranty.. as I've had a couple of PSU's burn out within a 5 year period. Would a Corsair 750 HX be overkill for an i7 920 over clocked to 3.6 or 3.8, where at a later date I'm looking to put in a new DX11 card? I'm just thinking of longevity here.. as I read the 1366 motherboards will also support the i9 when they come out.
750W is only really required for SLI/Crossfire, and only if they're power hungry cards (which the 40nm DX11 GPUs aren't). The reason I suggested the 750W version is that it's based on a newer platform (the 650W version is just a slightly updated version of the old HX620), so is more efficient, and therefore quieter. If you just want something that will get you by without thinking about future upgrades then you might as well get something a bit cheaper with a lower rated wattage. Maybe I'm just being picky, they're both good PSUs and come with more than enough connections even for a dual card setup.
If your thinking of going crossfire at some point, socket 1366 would be more preferable. However a 750w modular PSU from Corsair or BeQuiet will be the maximum your ever going to need even with two HD5870's strapped to it.
Maybe [Seasonic x 750] will tick all your boxes It has excellent reviews, gold certificate and due to it's high efficiency produces very low heat and therefore as one reviewer put it "ridiculously low noise" Bit on the expensive side though!
