Sorting out an old PC of mine for a family member to start using, only problem is - it has had trouble turning on properly so I want to sort this out beforehand.

I took it apart this afternoon and placed motherboard on a piece of cardboard and hooked up just the ATX connector. Nothing else is on the motherboard except the CPU & Fan (I've also excluded the CPU power connectors).

Powering it on (it has a small pwr button on mobo) it will come on briefly for quarter of a second then go off, then comes on again on its own accord and off again. This loops about 8 to 12 times before it stays on and fully powers up until I manually switch it off. This is also the same behaviour when all components are connected.

A soft click can be heard when its trying to power on, and PSU fan spinning up/down.

I've also tested the PSU on it's own by using a paperclip and joining a green and black wire, which powers on just fine.

    Any suggestions?

    Specs:
    2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
    Abit AW9D-Max i975X Motherboard
700W Tagan TG700-U35XL Easycon XL Modular PSU

Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Had a similar problem with my PC, clear CMOS did the trick.

Tried that also, didn't make a difference.

I didn't want to do this, but I turned off my PC and connected the Corsair PSU's ATX cable to the Abit motherboard and the motherboard stays powered on when hitting the switch. Guess it's time to order a new PSU!

Would Corsair Builder 430w be a good PSU replacement? Only got a Geforce 260 (requires 2x PCIe connections) running in this PC that won't ever have a fullscreen DirectX game running.
