Tho its probably spelt incorrectly, basically as the title says.

I'm looking in the 600-700W range - 500W would do the job, but I'm looking for a long serving part here and I am looking at the possibility of a second graphics card and a perhaps a faster CPU some point (current spec in sig.).

So far, I'm liking the look of the new version of what I have, the Hiper 680w HPU-5K680 - Ignoring the (pointless for me) USB ports, it seems to stack up quite well. Its made on iper production line at CWT (and therefore they oversee their own QC). Not completely satisfied with the choice of componants, but it offers a good price / noise / performance / efficiency combo.

Replacement is due to my current type R giving up on me this evening (nearly 4 years old, PC is pretty much on 24/7), tho it has served me pretty well. I quickly opened it up to find buldging capacitors and a tiny bit of brown.

It draws its juice from a APC 750VA UPS and I'm pretty sure its age that caused the fail not anything else.

The new Hiper Type-M 670, 730w and Type-R 730w are supposed to be decent units. Not certain there is enough of a history yet for the specific models to show stability over the long term. If not a Hiper model, one of the Seasonic M12 or S12 line of 500w or more, or a Corsair 520w and higher would fit the bill. Gives you a bit of a choice between looks and sufficient, stable power. My understanding is some of the new Hiper Type Rs come with modulated cables. However, those aren't available in the US at this time. Lucky for you, you're in Wales. ;)

By all accounts the corsair HX PSUs are made by Seasonic and internaly are the same as the S12 range. I bought a HX 620w to replace my Type-R that went bang in a most spectacular way and have been very impressed with it, its very quiet, has a good choice of modular cables and Seasonic are very highly regarded.

I've been extremely impressed with my Seasonic S12, and from the reviews I've seen, the excellence extends through all the different wattage models.

Definitely grab a Corsair HX620. You won't be disappointed.

I should probably add that I own and run three Corsair PSUs and love them -- two 620w and one 520w.

For a PSU, definitely look for Channel Well Technology built units. Best OEM there is. Seasonic is fine for the Corsair HX620 and below, but nothing beats a CWT across the board.

After a bit of consideration I've been looking at the Seasonic M12-600W, The idea of modular has been toying with me, plus this psu is in stock, and i can go and get it today - i don't want to be using this horrendous laptop till mid next week!

Or the hiper, which is also in stock, but not modular.

    I like corsair.

Cwt is fine, but I still like seasonic more.

From what I've been reading (ooh me brain), the M12 and things similar are of an old design (not saying its a bad thing).

Every time I seem to come close to choosing, another unit Pops UP.

So far, the Corsair HX620, the seasonic M12 and the Hiper Typr R MKII (HPU-5K680)

The first 2 being seasonic and the latter being CWT, which i guess is a thing of personal preference.

Throwing length into consideration (my current type R is a mere 150x140x86), the corsair is L150, the seasonic L160 and the hiper a massive L180 (which basicallt rules it out!)

Also the seasonic made items look less cluttered inside, and i do have a problem with heat here...

    oh choices

Being slightly impulsive, and needing my PC back up, I ran with the corsair - 5 years g'tee, has the ooomp I need (plus a fair bit more), it was the physically smallest of the 3 I was looking at. It was the g'tee that swayed it.

Dan, (dude y'all right?) I only briefly looked at tagen, and though I like them and their rep, I don't know much about who makes them (or if they have their own production line). Also, funky as their modular design is, I think its a little bulky. Plus I moved away from the whole lights thing a while back - and i didn't fancy voiding a warranty to 'turn them off' (I could cope with the ones around the module, but not the fan ones)!!

Fine ta matey. Basically the cream of PSU designers from various manufacturers formed tagan a few years ago IIRC. I havent looked at their range recently, but my 480W U01 is still going strong after being used and abused by me for the last 4.5 years, with no lights inside it :).

Can't remember the last time I've recommended a tagan.

Oh wait, I never have. :)

Any reason why? I've heard a lot of good things about them.
Is it because their OEM is Topower? Not exactly the best manufacturer out there, but people don't seem to have many issues with the Tagans regardless.

Seasonic is fine up until about 600 watts, but after that the quality takes a nose dive.

And to the Tagan people, yes Tagan sucks because Topower is their OEM. They could have at least had some sense and use Enhance for their OEM, or even better, CWT.

I don't recommend tagan for the reason of sub par quality and reliability.

Topower just doesn't make power supplies the way they used to. Solid build quality, but voltage regulation, ripple, crossloads, and such are handled poorly. Plus, given the price, and that they rely on bling to move units (mirror casing, plastic coated sleeved cables, lights, chrome, etc), there are usually many better options.

That being said, I don't hate ALL topower psu's. I used to use a powerstream 420.
