BAH! Even if i disregard the shoddy translations that are sometimes forced on us, i'm sick of the way some publishers started to treat eastern Europe lately. The game that triggered this rant is Mass Effect 2. Originally i bought the Xbox 360 version, just to find out that the hungarian Xbox Live service, which only had its full launch recently, lacks most DLC for most games. Thus i couldn't access any content for ME2 either, including those i was entitled to via the Cerberus code. Fast forward to today, Fizzban, after finding out about my troubles gave me his spare PC license. I punched the code into EADLM, and it decided to install the hungarian version for me. Alright, no big deal, the voices are still english. Let's go check the DLC - Oh, a smug message stating that most of the decent packs don't support the hungarian/czech/polish version. FFFFUUUUU Another recent example is Fallout: New Vegas. The only reason i got to play Dead Money is because i was lucky enough to buy a UK retail version and register it on Steam. Otherwise i would still be waiting for Cenega (evidently Bethesda's distributor in this region) to get their **** together. No, giving me a crappy hungarian menu is not impressive enough to lose access to content in exchange. For the love of god, if you want to release localized versions, make them optional or at least have the courtesy to make additional content compatible. ****.
sucks for you but.... come on, that's not racism. Let's not start this You do have the right to be pissed, though.
Im not sure that can be considered racism mate. It it wrong though and I think it is discrimination but not racial.
That is so lame.. It should have given you the option of downloading either the standard English version or the localised version. Sorry mate, that REALLY sucks Edit: I will NOT be thwarted! There is still a way to play these DLC. (Although they will be in English, not in Polish, Czech or Hungarian.) There are two obstacles you must overcome: getting the website to let you buy the DLC, and installing the DLC. The former is easily done. The latter will require editing the Windows Registry. You will be prevented from buying these DLC if you have set the Bioware Social Network to display in one of the unsupported languages (Polski, Ceština or Magyar). Switch to a different language in the drop-down box and it should allow you to buy any ME2 DLC. If you installed Mass Effect 2 with the Polish, Hungarian or Czech language pack, you will need to trick the installers for the affected DLC in to thinking you have an English version installed. This can be accomplished by editing the Windows registry (choose “Run” on the Windows Start menu and type “regedit”): Change entry Language in the following registry key from "pl" (or whatever you have there) to "en" 32bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\BioWare\Mass Effect 2 64bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BioWare\Mass Effect 2 Then install DLC and after that change Language back to original value. The affected DLCs (Lair of the Shadow Broker, Alternate Appearance Pack 2, and Arrival) will be entirely in English, but the rest of the game should still be playable in Polish, Czech or Hungarian.
You're a legend mate! While i was at it i also managed to change the text language back to english. The hungarian translation was quite comical, for instance the elusive man became the hiding dude. So basically the only reason the DLC isn't "compatible" with these localized versions is that they were too stingy to get the text translated. Such lovely people at EA.
I used my region as the UK and xbox live didnt know the differncce, I get billed in sterling, could you change it to a country close to your own that has more content?
Well the issue was solved, so the lesson is if your country can't get DLC then fool it into thinking yours is an english computer
Rejtőző fickó .... which as you can check it out on google translate translates directly as "Hidden guy" or more correctly as "Hiding guy". And btw, this is not just Hungary, but pretty much anything east to the german/austrian/italian border. XBOX Live ? You don't get that. GFWL DLC and sometimes even support for singleplayer ? You don't get that (yes, there are people who bought game, installed it, connected it to their GFWL account just to game say sorry, you are living in wrong region, you can't play). Music from iTunes or Amazon MP3 ? You don't get that. Paid apps for Android ? You don't get that either. And i can continue with numerous services for which this central european region (Poland, Czech republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia) doesn't even exist. On positive side, at least Valve counts as a secondary EU citizens too, so we get lower prices sometimes (like Portal 2 for 34.19e instead of the 44.99e western european price).
maybe the trick i use will work for you going forward. in windows control panel under region and language set your location to for example united states. this seems to be what most software looks at while installing to do localization check. i use it in the reverse, setting mine to russia so i can install my original versions of the stalker games. i wanted it so much i bought the russian releases because they come out a few months before and seemed to be less buggy as well. i also have russian version of fallout3 that i got a week ahead. all of them won't install unless i have region set to russia. ironically i have to reset it to united states to install fallout3 dlc though. i do know what you mean though about the central eastern european region. no one really seem to care about that market and expect you to be happy you got anything at all. i remember when i was in budapest my friend took me out to the cinema one night. there was some american movie she wanted to see, but it was overdubbed all of the dialogue by 1 person. so terrible.
