    Hi all,
Need some suggestions...None of our Old PC (XP/OS) games load or work on this New laptop, we've tried the Windows 7 " Programs Compatability" feature and... Nothing....Games don't load or play after installation:

    OUR CUSTOMIZED HP PC
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 Graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    • 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 5.0 hours of battery life +++
    • Standard Keyboard
    • 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
    • Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • HP TrueVision Webcam with Integrated Digital Microphone
    • 802.11b/g/n WLAN
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
    .....
Games are: Cossacks-European Wars.....Cossacks- Back to War.......Cossacks 2: Battle for Europe
Games manufacturer CDV lists recommended requirements to play these games as... (Right Off the back of the box):

-Windows 2000/XP (NOT vista or XP Pro 64 bit version)
    -Pentium 4 2.0 GHz/athlon XP 2000
    -GeForce 4 Ti/Radeon 8500-class HW T&L, 64MB
    -DirectX 9.0c

I think we have the correct config on this New laptop to play these....are we missing something? Upgrades? already?

This New HP pavilion we have here should play these games correct?

    Thanx for any feedback.
    ....

Specs-wise you're fine, update the ATi drivers though, the 5650 should take the latest ones (mine does).

Try running the games as administrator (right click shortcut to game --> properties --> compatibility --> run as admin), and try a few other compatibility options in that list too.

I wonder if it's a 64bit thing, given the box categorically says not 64 bit XP or Vista, and you are running 64bit W7...

    Also, GF4 Ti? Oooooold.

Given that Cossacks European Wars was like a Windows 95/98 game - it doesn't surprise me at all that you might be having trouble. These games are just too old to run out of the box on Windows 7.

Are you getting any error messages? I would google "[game name] windows 7" and see if anyone else has managed to get it running. European wars comes up with something about dcmr.exe crashing or an error message or something - do you get that?

YOU , YOU , YOU are good!
Yes...exactly....I always get that dcmr.exe Error message after installing the games...can't get around it....sometimes I can get them load after a few re-installs but then the all the display on the screen go "purplish/Greenish"....as if the the graphics are not in "sync"???
almost looks like a tie-die effect if that makes any sense?

I'll try all your suggestions here.
    thank you

Old games weren't designed to work on new OS's.

Some games have had patches so they are compatiable with newer OS's but I wouldn't get your hopes up! I have had these problems too being partial myself of a bit of retro gaming.

You best bet is to try the developers and se if they have made updates. There are some 3rd party programs which can help emulate the environment they were made to work in (DOSbox for example for DOS games) but I'm not sure there is a "one for all" solution, if there is I haven't found one.

Its surprising - even some W95/98 games won't even work in XP32. I assume you have googled around a bit to try and find a work around? Probably will take a bit of time and dabbling/trial and error but I'm sure someone else out there must have found a workaround for those particular games you want to play again?
