    I'd say 9600. The Nvidia equivilent of the Radeon 9600 is an FX5700 to my knowlege. However nvidia is more supported (linux etc).

    :hip: 9600 isn't bad, it's around FX5700 speed which is certainly a big step up from the FX5200. However the 9600Pro/XT and up offer a lot more bang for your money, the 9800 are great value and very powerful indeed. If your budget really is very limited then 9600 is probably about the best you can get, decent o/c'ability too. It should be able to play most games with medium quality at a good res (1024 minimum). Even the demanding Doom III should be playable at around 800x600 on Low details (not truly low by other games' standards).

    You can take the Radeon 9550XT(gecube)...it's different from the other 9550 because with a little overclock can touch the performance of a 9600Pro...and then it's not very expensive i think...in italy is around 100€ so i think the same in USA

    ;) The GF4TI4200 is still a great card and only recently can the DX9 cards begin to show their strength against it (in games like Doom III). The 4200 can often beat the Rad9600PRO and GF-FX5600ULTRA until you need AA+AF or DX9. The 9600PRO and 4200 also have a lot of o/c'ing headroom in them, the 4200 can often get near 4600 speed while the 9600Pro can often exceed 9600XT speed! If the 9700 or 9800 (non SE) don't cost much extra it's much faster so is worth considering too.

    :thumb: The 9550 (non SE) is usually a tad slower than the 9600 (non SE) but has a very keen price and like the 9600 has a great potential o/c (although the slow RAM speed is always going to be limiting). The Gecube 9550 'XT-PE' is not an official ATI spec, it's faster than the plain 9600 thanks to 400/500 clocks, very close to the 9600Pro's 400/600. See how the prices compare.

    9600XT=500/600
    9600PRO=400/600
    9600=325/400
    9550=250/400
    9600SE=325/400(64bitDDR)
    9550SE=250/400(64bitDDR)
