POTM Q: Should POTM winners not be allowed to enter the following month?

I just want to know a general consensus since the POTM has been going a while now but we get quite a few regular winners. I'm only suggesting it so as we can possibly open the field up so more people have a chance of winning some OCZ prices, rather than the same people having more USB sticks then they need ;)

    So, thoughts?

They should definately be able to enter, maybe the prize-winnings should be restricted somewhat? I don't think anyone's really that bothered for prizes though.

OK, so shall I stop prizes? Is it OK as it is? Do those who keep getting them still want prizes (I'm assuming they've all been the same)?

    You can win stuff?

Seriously, if somebody wins regular it's because he/she deserves it.

I'm very pleased that our POTM has stayed small and modest. You get creative advice instead of pixelpeeping that alot of other fora are infested with. Plus it isn't filled with pro's that make any other picture look like a snapshot.

If the winner has no use for the price, they could always kindly decline and give it to the person with the second most votes. But I see no reason why to exclude previous winners for upcoming potm-prices.

Since prizes started to be awarded for the top 3, I've been luck enough to be voted 1st, 2nd or 3rd on 4 occasions.
Fist time I received an OCZ Rally 4GB memory stick.
Second time I received the same and an SD card.
    Third time nothing arrived.
This time I don't mind if there is a prize or not, I just have fun entering.

Mind you prizes are always nice too :)

    Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Twice now I've won a prize for 4th place (one person took two of the top three). To be honest, I'm just doing this as an excuse to get out and get shooting. I thank OCZ for donating the prizes (the 4GB memory stick has come in handy many times), but I'm not going to cry if they go away.

If I'm completely honest, then yeah, I'd love to win one of these days. On then other hand, if the community thinks someone else takes a better photo then it's just going to make me try harder next time.

It kind of defeats the point of the competition if you don't allow winners to enter the next month. The competition isn't about prizes (although I guess it's a nice touch for the winner), it's about improving one's photography.

Well, although it's complicated, maybe run a points-tally for each person that wins? 1st = 3, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 1, so once you get 10 points you don't get prizes? I dunno, doesn't really matter while they're still low-value (ish) prizes. As nice as they are, most people don't enter for them. :)

I enter because it's fun. It builds my experience up, too.

prizes are good, it makes people vote and get involved, it is an insentive to take good pictures, if there wasn't it wouldn't be much of a competition, more of a "this is what I took that fits the theme" :)

I like the prizes :) They're like the frosting on the cake :)
In a case where someone wins over and over and over again and doesn't really care for the prize I think he or she should just be able to decline in case they don't want it.
I like that they are so minor as well because it underlines the fact that we do it out of wanting to take pictures not win prizes.

Don't take them away :) The 4GB stick I won is the fastest I've ever owned huzzah for that! Thank you OCZ and Bit-tech :)

A lot of smilies... I like to smile... What can I say :)

On the contrary, people tried just as hard before the prizes. It attracts some new enterers perhaps, but most people do it just for the experience and interest tbh. :)

Yes. edit: QFT, rather, seeing that "yes" could be misinterpreted given the thread title

It totally took me by surprise when Bindi PMd me for an address after taking third this month. I thought I had a new stalker for a moment. For me, it's an excuse to try new techniques or shoot a subject I'd have otherwise ignored. If I win a prize, yay, but may the best photographer win and prizes be damned. Of course I've been hoping to win, but the prizes had nothing to do with it - merely for the sense of accomplishment, and having a reason to get some prints made.

    (congrats on the 6kth post)

OK cool, I'll leave it as it is :D

Just wondering because no one seems to say anything

I've sent last months winners off to OCZ already, hopefully they'll get something soon :thumb:

I've been saying for a while now (on IRC) that the winner of the previous month shouldn't be allowed to enter as they are always the best/get the most votes due to favouritism/whatever reason here.

It would be nice to have some other people win for a change but I think all the time that those whose skill is greater than the others are entering that this will just not be possible. It all feels very one sided to me.

[dons flame proof suit for this one]

I have no objections to the same people claiming the prizes, they take the best photographs. I still think we need to simplify the voting process which might shake things up a bit.

Absolutely agreed. Something needs to be done about the voting system to facilitate an easier process that allows one to visually compare multiple entries on the same screen.

You pay attention to previous winners when voting in the current month?
