As I said before my failed packard bell BIOS prevents any overclocking. :(

The Biostar seems like a solid choice if it was stocked anymore.

There's not many P45 mobos around now. Scan are selling an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo for £100. If I remember it got a decent write up in CustomPC. How much RAM do you have in your current rig? You don't really want to have to buy RAM as well as that would cost up to another £100 for 4GB.

I had just been thinking that the P5q Turbo looked good when I read your post :hehe:

    I currently only have 3gb ram (can't remember wether that's 1x3gb or 1x2gb + 1x1gb), should that be enough?

when i build my PC about 18months ago i bought a Q6600 and Asus P5Q pro. Got it up to 3.4ghz without any voltage tweaks and that being a complete newbie to overclocking. both ebuyer and scan have it for a snippet under a £100. If i remember correctly i got the motherboard on the basis of a good bit-tech review. I think its a pretty general consensus that overclocking your cpu would be the best option solely on the basis of gaming.

Ok, my current upgrade list is this:

    1GB XFX HD 5770 £136.05
    Asus P5Q Pro Turbo £99.76
    Xigmatek UTGARD Case £64.50
    Gelid Tranquillo Heatsink Fan £26.05

    Total: £326.36

Only thing im wondering now is wether it's worth it to upgrade from 3 gb (possibly unbalanced) RAM to 4gb RAM for about an extra £90

I just looked it up. It was back in Aug 09 & it was the Asus P5Q Turbo which is a different board. If tech naming convention had any logic then it would stand that the Asus P5Q Pro Turbo should offer more, the Pro has extra PCIe slot. Blackmoon, the 3.4Ghz is most likley the CPU limit as well as noted previously in this thread. That's my stable limit on a Biostar TP45 HP with a Q6600.

Oh & 3GB of RAM is no good you need 2x2GB modules to run in dual channel. 2GB isn't enough.

Shop around for RAM. At Scan your paying more for Corsair, although the RMA support is excellent. You will be fine with 800MHz RAM as well.

    I run a Q6600 on an Abit IP35 Pro with 4GB (2x2GB of Corsair XMS2 800MHZ ) I have a 3.4GHZ OC on a passive Scythe Ninja cooler, inside an Antec 1200.

Still runs what I play perfectly, and thats with a 24" main and a 20" secondary.

You getting it from Scan, or going down to Novatech? I used both Novatech and Scan, but for sheer convenience, Novatech wins for me, thus i kinda get everything from them now.

If you can't overclock and have a decent psu

stick a 5850 in it and you will notice a much bigger boost than anything suggested here

Well here's my current list of upgrades:

    Components from Ebuyer:

    Components from Scan:

Thats comes to £429.69 (however now I think about it, I could reuse my 750GB hard drive & my dvd drive, knocking off about £50)

This the one i'll be upgrading from (just reposting it)

Seems to be a good upgrade from your current build. I think you will enjoy it very much. Try to find out the what your hard drive is with the help of stickers on it, if any.
