Hi guys Building a system for my brother and he doesnt want to spend over £300 but he wants a quad core system ive tried to find the stuff on scan and heres what i have come up with: https://secure.scan.co.uk/aspnet/Shop/Basket.aspx He want to stick with intel so no AMD if you can find things cheaper it will be a big help
Basket link doesnt work. "System" including case, hard drive, cooler and optical? Or just mobo, memory and cpu? Former you'd be very very hard pushed, but latter is easy.
He wants a whole system he doesnt game its just for regular work but he definitly wants a quad core heres what i have come up with: Coolermaster RC-330 Elite Blk/Silv Midi Tower Case w/o PSU - £28.97 2GB Corsair XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-18 22.59 Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200, S775, Yorkfield Core, 2.33 GHz, 1333MHz, 4MB Cache, 7x Ratio, 95W, Retail - £106.94 500W CIT Black 12cm V2.2 Dual Rail Psu - £21.84 640GB Western Digital WD6400AACS Caviar Green, SATA 3Gb/s, IntelliPower, 16MB Cache, NCQ - £44.74 Asus P5QL/EPU, Intel P43, Sok 775, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR2 1066(OC)/800, SATA 3Gb/s, ATX £57.49 LG GH22NS50 22x DVD±R, 16xDVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RWx6 ,12xRAM SATA, Black, OEM £16.66 Net Total = £260.19 Carriage = £9.43 VAT = £40.44 TOTAL - £310.06
ebay might be your friend here. Q6600 would be anywhere between £60-100 depending on age, a P35 motherboard £50 easy and memory definalty under £50, leaving £100 for the rest of the crap needed.
What kind of work is 'regular work'? If that's just MS Office apps and no encoding/rendering/editing then he won't even need a quad. As pointed out, you're going to struggle without an OS. Perhaps just advise him to get something like this if that's all he's going to need. There's no point going overboard with a custom build because either way you're going to be getting cheap components.
yeh i was looking at that too but hes so set on a quad core he doesnt know much about pc's he thinks more numbers equal a better computer and even if he doesnt use it he still wants it. Regular work is MS office, web browsing and the odd video editing, photoshop
Please god don't sped £21 on a PSU. If that blows then its possible for it to wipe out everything. Why don't you tell him that for what he wants, a dual will be faster, as it will be higher clocked. And that for his budget, its near....no, it is impossible to build a Quad core system.
There are plenty of LGA775 motherboards on Ebuyer with onboard VGA - you could go for one of those if games aren't required. And the Windows 7 RC is still available - or Linux Mint which is the only distro I've ever managed to get working but is actually very good! If you went with Windows 7 he could buy a full version in March which would give him some time to save up!
I don't think he'll be able to get an Intel Quad build for £300 (assuming ~$500), I'll give it a try though.. Q8200 Gigabyte EP43-UD3L 2x2GB OCZ Blade DDR2-800 Corsair 400CX Cooler Master Elite 330 WD Caviar Blue 320GB Zotac 9600GT -rebates +shipping = $500 You'll need to buy an OS or get Win7, and I hope he has a monitor/keyboard/mouse.
thanks for all your efforts guys for helping me ill either have to tell him to up his budget or get a core 2 duo or a dual core
That's not too bad, but that exact spec will set you back more than £350 excluding shipping over here, such is the way the exchange rates work The problem is still the OS, however - it's all very nice have that hardware but you can't even think about using it without one. Another option might be to just use the Windows 7 RC for a bit while saving up for an OS, but at some point you're going to have to buy one.
What about this guys I got this from novatech its just over budget Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 4 x 2.33Ghz 4Mb Cache 1333 FSB Quad Core Processor - Retail £96.84 Corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 800MHz Dual Channel Kit £24.99 OCZ StealthXStream 400w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply £29.99 Asus P5QPL-AM Intel G41 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £41.99 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 320GB SATA II 7200rpm 16Mb Cache 11ms 300Mb/s £29.66 LG 22x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer DVD-RAM SATA Black - OEM £15.76 Novatech Pure ATX Tower Case - Black - NO PSU £17.38 Novatech ATI Radeon HD4350 512MB GDDR2 TV-Out/Dual DVI PCI-Express £24.99 Delivery Options: Total Basket Ex VAT: £281.60 ex vat Delivery Charge: £7.39 ex vat Basket + Delivery Ex VAT: £288.99 ex vat VAT @ 15.0%: £43.35 Total Basket Value: £332.34 inc vat
Well straight off you can drop the 4350 to bring it nearly down to budget (albeit still without an OS ), as that motherboard has an IGP (G41 chipset).
That looks about right. yes the motherboard has onboard gfx. I've used this board on a couple occasions for cheap builds for friends. So far no problems it does the job well!
The only reason i have the GPu is coz he has an lcd screen with a DVI cable already so i can hopefully persuade him to up his budget to £350 and then i can buy him a couple of 120mm fans for the case and leave me money for drinks
BAH! For goodness sake, calm down - not all cheapo PSUs will blow up and take your computer with it - if your buidling a £300 quad core pc your gonna have to make sacrifices, I was running an EZCool 550W for half a year, it was fairly quiet and never gave me ANY trouble what so ever...
That looks like a good setup, but you don't need the HD4350. Save the £24.99 and use the onboard graphics instead.
