Am building a quad gtx295 gaming rig and have intalled 1200W PSU but system wont boot up without connecting a second 1000W PSU just to run the 2 x GTX295 cards...
Doesnt make sense as the 1200W should be ample juice??

Can someone look over the specs and confirm if dual PSUs are needed or if a single 1600w PSU will be enough

    Specs as follows

    i7965 OC
    X58 extream mobo
    2 x Inno3d GTX 295 OC
    6G DD3
    2 x 300G raptors
    1 x 1TB WD HD
    7 x case fans

Rig should kick ass if I can get the power problem sorted :wallbash:

For a second the title of the thread make me think you have four cards in quad/octo sli.
A 1200 shouldve been enough though.

I bet the Rail that the 8 pin PCI-E cables all on is weak as hell. A 1Kw PSU should be more than enough juice for Quad SLI and a I7.

It should be enough, although reading a review

"The only real criticism we have of the Gigabyte Odin Pro 1200w is that it uses four 12v rails; a single large rail would have been better as it eliminates any chance of overloading the rail by mistake"

    http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=736&p=4

Only guess is that, but I'm no expert on PSU's, and I have no idea of how to overcome that if it is the cause of the problem.

Something is up, they cant draw that much

Mi mate has a corsair 1000W power supply 3 way SLI gtc 280's

    Core i7 920 OC 4.2

He can run furmark + prime 95 and they rear lights still remain green on all 3 cards

RMA it or better change it for another brand like corsair never had an issue with em + the 5 year warrenty :)

    Cheers Trent

dude, is it possible to arrange the connectors in a different way, thus balancing the load over all the rails?

If you overload a rail, it does not nessicarily mean the PSU is faulty. You have to try to connect each card, the processor, and all the other stuff each to their own rail. If that fails, the PSU is either faulty or simply incompatible with your layout. RMA will do you no good in that last scenario.

Conclusion: either balance the load out over the rails or exchange the PSU with a single-rail model.

Good luck, and have fun with that killer rig! :thumb:

Worrying... I've just bought a 800W Odin :jawdrop:

I hope it's a one off RMA job and not trouble brewing for me as well. I've only got one GTX295 tho.. I'm not greedy :)

There was a disussion about this over on xtremesystems, with a guy with QUAD crossfire and a 965, all watercooled, running off of a HX1000, more than enough, as others have said, due to the arrangement of the ampage, (over 4 seperate rails) presumably one is overloaded, and so I would reccomend just get the HX1000, unbeatable PSU in my opinion,

Sod the 1200W TC unless you want your ears blown off. It's a lovely build but I'd only use it if my PC was in the basement under 3 ft of lead.

1200W IS MASSIVE and should easily compensate for quad 295s there should be no problem in booting it. A HX1000W will do you no problem - we've run quad 295s off a Galaxy DXX 1kw without issue.

And for the record, I hope to god you've also got a 30" screen to go with all that and you spent 95% of your day gaming.

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I am just eyeballing this, but it looks to me like when it says...

...that it's actually two 600W PSUs shoved into one casing.

I haven't actually found anything to support that specifically (aside from a review by LegionHardware that says the innards are laid out as if that were the case), but it may be possible that it's designed to feed a maximum of 600W of power to the graphics and a maximum of 600W of power to the rest of the system...

Just getting back to everyone with an update on the power supply saga!!!

    Thanks for all the feedback

Boffins building the rig checked the rails, balancing and amps and confirm the rig is not enough juice... next step is to try a 1600w..... will post another update when the build is finished, overclocked, stablity tested and delivered (ETA 1 Feb)
