It's come to the time at work where I need to sort some proper training for my 'junior' (read: minion). He's got A-Levels and knows his way around a PC and XP pretty well. And is getting experience being a Systems Admin, I've let him loose creating users, exchange mailboxes and a bit of GP creating but not anything more really. What type of course should I be looking for? Something Microsoft I'm assuming? All the abbreviations are a bit confusing to me
CCNA will get him a very good footing in essential networking skills if he needs those (I think everyone should)
Because it is part of my job to specify training requirements And he certainly will have me about for the forceable future! That's not so much an issue for my company, our networking is looked after by our parent company and the physical hardware by the buildings contractors. I was looking for something more to do with the Microsoft systems..
Think about what you have to do on an average day, and explain that to him. Make sure he's comfortable with those tasks. After that, show him some more advanced things (upgrading, troubleshooting,...) and make sure he is interested in what he's doing. If he is, he'll surely seek his own way. And make him also see there's a way besides MS products... as for courses:
On the job training is fine, I have a proper structured plan for that. It's not that I need to know how to train my staff, more so that company training policy for junior staff says that they should have gained an industry recognised qualification that is relevant and valid to their job by the end of their training period. He has been here 10 months and I need to sort something to start next academic year.
