hope this is in th eright place. Just a quick 2 part question about sleep mode. PART 1 Obviously switching your rig off when its not in use is better than leaving it on 24/7 but is putting it into sleep mode also better than leaving it on 24/7? PART 2 Reason I ask is that I used to leave my PC on constantly but now i find myself leaving it for a few hours at a time, to watch a dvd on the blu-ray or go for a drive with friends e.t.c. Would this be benificial instead of turning it on and off all the time? t4n6o
As Tel said, basically the only benefit of sleep is the quicker boot time. Shutting down and switching back on obviously clears RAM which is good every now and then.
i take it that it uses a lot less power/watts.energy (electricity) when its in sleep mode? As I use it a lot but instead of turning it on and off all the time for if i go out for a few hours i usually leave it in sleep mode, but if i'm gone for a day or more I would shut it down. How much power consumtion woiuld sleep mode actually use as if its as much as on constantly or near as dam it then I may as well turn it off. the long and shortg of it is that I am just trying to think of my leccy bill in the long run as i can imagine that it uses a bit more power on start up jusk like machinery (engerneering e.t.c.)
It does use a lot less than being switched on, I think mine draws less than 10W when in sleep mode. However, on start up it will use the same amount of power (or very close) as it still needs to get the fans moving, get the HDD up to speed etc etc. Personally I shut mine down, I don't like things being kept in RAM that I might need, there's always the chance of a power cut.
I shut mine down and reboot now and then but I've gone away for a week and left them in sleep the whole time, As I said though I dont use sleep on all of them just the one's thats in use a lot, I actually have 6 rigs and 3 are in sleep the other 3 I shut down when not in use.
mine are on 24/7 , but i quite often remote access mine, i did a little test to see how much power i was using, and to be fair, turning off made a little difference to power consumption i do turn my screen off though, when not in use, modern graphics cards use little power when not doing anything stressfull
