I won this motherboard in a mod contest recently and I'm buying all of my other hardware to build another system. And I just had a couple of questions.... I've ordered a 2500+ Barton and an SLK-900-A, which is the clip on version of the heatsink. I would have naturally preferred the Alpha or Swifty, but since this board has no mounting holes, that wasn't an option. So I plan on slapping a 92mm Panaflo H1A on it...but I don't believe they have rpm monitoring on the fan. So my question is, will this cause a problem with the motherboard? I've looked through the manual and I don't see anywhere that it mentions that the cpu fan must have rpm monitoring...and I don't see any settings in the BIOS to enable or disable it. Looking in the manual...I'm not sure I even see a header on the motherboard for a cpu fan. Which makes sense since most of us use higher power fans that often plug right into a psu connector. But I know some older motherboards wouldn't start up without sensing the cpu fan rpm as a safety precaution. Do you think I'll have a problem? On another note, I'm toying with which ram to buy. I figure I'm getting a cpu that seems to be able to do 3200+ speeds pretty easily for a lot of people. So DDR400 ram should be fine. I doubt I would ever try to go higher than that on my fsb anyway since I will only be air cooling. So do you think I would be okay to go with Crucial PC3200 ram...since it runs at 400Mhz? If I went with Geil or Corsair I would only be able to afford the value stuff. And Crucial has always been rock solid for me. I know it's only CAS 3, but I think I saw a shoot out somewhere where the crucial was keeping pace pretty well with some of the other big boys. EDIT: Okay I see where there is a header for the processor fan and a header for a system fan. Here is what the manual says: "If the mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset on-board, you must use a specially designed fan with speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control." Okay....that still doesn't really answer my question though.
Hi, I have a MSI KT6 Delta LSR, and it has an integrated mobo protection system called CoreCenter, that continually checks the temp and raise or decrease the speed of the cpu fan. If you see an small silver box on the mobo and it says: CoreCell, is a plus. Remember if you install an fan that doesn't have a rpm sensor, it works at top speed always, you can regulate the rpm using an roebus. Hope that's answer your question.
in other words, it doesn't require it, but if it has rpm sensing, the board can adjust the fans speed according to its temp
Thanks for that fellas. Yeah, the Panaflo doesn't have rpm sensing but everything appears to be running just dandy. I just finally got the heatsink and fan yesterday and built the system last night. Seems quick and stable and appears to be staying pretty cool. I'll let it burn in for a bit and see what kind of temps I'm getting.
