I have an XP 2200+ and have reading online for a few hours learning multiple ways to unlock the processor (plan on doing, but never done before). While reading, I found a review that said : " This is probably the most surprising thing for an AMD processor, but the Athlon XP 2200+ isn’t really overclockable at least in major proportions. Natively the CPU uses a 13.5 clock multiplier (13.5*133=1800 MHz). During our extensive testing we weren’t able to safely push the CPU over 1890 MHz (with 13.5*140) which represents a 5% only overclocking!" Is this true? Have any of you that have a 2200+ and haveo/c'd with it gotten any better?
Oh yeah, I ask this because if this is true, a 90MHz increase doesn't seem worth it for the trouble of unlocking the processor. Which would help me in my decision of wether I want to unlock it or not.
That refers to the Thoroughbred-A cores. The Thoroughbred-B cores are much better OCers and can hit 2.2 GHz easy with a good stepping.
If the codes are printed on the core itself, its a Tbred-A. If the codes are on a sticker (ot on the core) its a TBred-B. Aslo try here -> http://mp3.zonebg.com/cpu/cpu.php
If you have a Thoroughbred A these seem to come unlocked already but you need a mobo that allows you to change the multipler. So it would be better to run at 11 x 166mhz = 1826mhz, as the improved memory speed would help you. It does sound like you have a tbred A which I also have which will do around 1950mhz odd. The tbred Bs are generally better overclockers as people have already said.
tbred Bs come unlocked already, and if you have a good enough board such as the Abit NF7-s it unlocks the multi up a whopping 22-23 (cant remember which)
