I ran about 7ft of 18ga to the trunk for powering my laptop car-pc. Is this enough? (Yes it's a mess right now) The power supply is 8.5amps max and I fused it with a 10amp quick blow fuse. Looking at the AWG it seems that that can carry 16amps ok in open air. While the wire isn't bundled, bundled, it does run through the same channels as the cars factory harnesses. So is this ok or should I go lower? If it is ok, what is the maximum amperage I should restrict it to? The outlet I put back there has 3 12v sockets. So I'm wondering if I can use them as needed (with a bigger fuse) or if I have to rewire if I want to add something. Thanks, -Lee
Thanks. It's a 02 Chrysler Sebring Coupe LXI. Going for a full digital dash replacement. There's more on the car and the mods I've done here A blog with the ongoing work is here.
thats sweet! i wish the prius display looked that good... gonna turn out realy cool in the end. i started a page to keep track of all the sh#t ive done but i got lazy and stoped ( http://theeshadow.net/carmod/ ) im gonna keep an eye on this PIMPASTIC UI great lookin car, btw. ive got an S40 and i hope to do some similar work.
Thanks. S40's a nice ride. The lcd is eventually going to end up in the dash itself. I only have speedo/tach/fuel/engin temp. They are luckily 4 little pcbs joined by a flexible circuit. I'm going to refactor it smaller (and tap the dummy lights) and mount it to the lcd. So I'll have normal gauges (and hide my display from theives) and with the press of a button, it's going to raise up, hiding the gauges and revealing the lcd. In the mean while, I'm going to put it in a converted center console (building this now). It pops right off so I can just stick it in, test, and pop it out so no one steals it.
That's pretty cool. It would look like the batmobile. I think when all is said and done, I'll go for the flip up. (Security through obscurity ) But the temp one is coming along.
haha okay, soccer mom i dont get how thats temporary... too much work for a tempie. just throw a towel over it at night, lol a real temp LCD is masking-taped to the dashboard over the passanger side airbag, with wires going all over the place, limiting your car to an occupency rating of 1.5 but that one looks good
Soccer mom? I've only spent 3 or 4 hours on it so far and i'm almost done. (Cut the prep work quite a bit) I'm sick of coverings, when I was painting my dashboard (which I did like 5 times) I was driving around with just the center reenforcement with my gauges ziptiped to it and a mess of wires covered by an afghan . I was doing that for like 3 months. I want something somewhat sturdy so I can just carry it to and from the car as needed. I'd hate to have my lilliput fall out and smash while transporting. If it comes out ok, maybe i'll keep that and get another for the dash. Edit: Here's what I'm thinking for the gauge/lcd combo. This would be hidden under a cowel so it would just look like a cool stock setup.
the only people who ive seen install flip down LCDs are soccer moms who want their kids to be entertained for the 5 minutes that they are in the car. lol. obscure not-so-funny reffrence that made sense in my head thats a cool cluster... but are the gauges sepreated by plastic, or is that done on the LCD screen? have you looked into OLED? thats supost to be good also... i want some lol
That's just a rough CAD of it. I'm going to actually take my actual gauge cluster, shrink it smaller and make a new housing (like the pic) and mount it to the back of the lcd. So I'll have both analog and digital gauges at the push of a button. When in Digital mode, a sail servo is going to lift the lcd up, hiding the regular gauge cluster. Make sense?
