Oh 5 things I forgot to mention.
Once vista is installed Indexer will kick in... so if your wonder for all that HDD activity and being a little slow... that's the reason. Once done installing everything, defrag, etc.. just leave the computer turned on over night. In the morning everything should be good.

The other thing is that every 3 days Windows Vista performs boot optimization. So your system will boot and load your account a little faster.

Last thing, a good performance tweak, is to enable "Advance performance" on your hard disk. But it is ONLY recommended if you keep a updated backup of your system and your are not in an environment were you get a lot of power surges. OR have your computer linked to some sort of battery. I never had an issue, even thus I did have many power surges and I don't have a battery backup, but I do backups of my system.
To change set this option, open the startmenu and type "device" and select "Device manager" (should be the first item so you can just press ENTER), and on it select your HDD, and open it's properties panel. Then go under the policy tab, and check the last check box.

User Account Control, that is the message box that ask you for permission to continue (request REAL admin privileges). Its a bit weird to see them for the first time, but you get used to it. And beside it's not like you access system settings and install application every day. So it won't bother you on normal system operation.

just wanted to let you guys know that i got my Vista 64 and so far,.... i love it! So far,... all my hardware works! Well,... i have something going on with my dual videos and monitors. Ummm,... you know how the OS number the monitors? Well,... the numbers are all over the place. My main monitor is 2 and my second is 3. It's also showing me two other that i dont have. Like 2 other potencial monitors. My "extra" monitor doesnt work until I enable and then disable SLI. If I shutdown or reboot,... the extra monitor will stay off. I dont know. I'm working on it Suggestions would be appreciated.

Vista 64 is showing me all 4GB of ram. I'm very excited about that:)

Also,... how do I disable the security need permission crap? Very annoying.

Make sure your PC can run smoothly with vista, minimum 2gb of RAM I would suggest. I put vista 32bit on a 2 year old laptop and after a few months of doing a fresh install it starts to lag...this can be very annoying. The easy option would be to upgrade my RAM, however I tried windows 7 and it runs like a charm, not like the memory hogging vista!

I've got 4GB of Ram now. I definitely plan on purchasing 4GB more seeing the my OS can support it now.

I fixed the monitor issue although my monitors are still labeled as 2 and 3. Whatever.

One question,... with XP Home I could create a toolbar and then move it to the top of my screen so that the width of the toolbar maxes out to the width of the screen. Well,... I created a toolbar but V64 won't let me take it off the main start bar. Anyway around this? I need that bar. LOL.

I ran Vista for a couple of years with only 1gb, and it was fine for normal use.

It's called User Account Control, or UAC, and should NOT be disabled. It's very good for security. No applications can modify system settings or files without your approval.

    It can be annoying, though.

I don't know how to disable it, and I suggest against doing it, but if you still want to disable it, this might help you.

I also suggest NOT to disable it, it saved my life several times!, especially once from an infection from a USB key of a friend. And like I said on my post that you spiked ready above. Normally using your computer, you won't install/uninstall stuff non stop nor play with system options once everything is configured. So it wont' bother you. (and you get used to it).

    Sure you can!
Right click on the taskbar, and uncheck the item by selecting it "Lock the taskbar", and now you can move the bar around and even pull it out and put it where you want, just like XP! The task bar functionality itself is the same as XP nothing got removed... just added.

Ok I wont disable the security feature.

About the moving of a new toolbar. It won't budge. I have "lock toolbar" unchecked. IT allows me to slide it back and forth. If I click on the toolbar name the all direction arrow shows up but still doesnt allow me to move it. Hmmmm.

Oh I see what you want to do.
Ok well here are 2 methods.

1- Drag the folder that contains the items your want and drag it to the edge most of the screen of where you want it to have it (by right-clicking on it you can customize it a bit).

2- Add a new bar on the task bar, which you can add it as it's separated bar (but still attached to the task bar) where you can set its own options like icon size.

Gotcha. Vista does it a bit differently. I did the folder thing where I dragged it to the edge. Thats what I was looking for.

I created a folder c:\shortcuts and dragged that because I didnt want a folder on my desktop. Thanks dude.

I can't believe how well Vista 64 is working. I havent had any problems whatsoever. I got most of my 64bit drivers online and so far a lot of the everyday programs I use that I thought they wouldnt work do in fact work:) So I am happy:)

Do you know of a GOOD hardware monitoring program gadget that will show me system temps? The only program I have had success with monitoring temps so far is Everest. But it's not a gadget. I though it would be pretty cool to see temps floating in my sidebar as opposed to being in my system tray.

Speedfan and Addgadget.com's All CPU Meter with temperatures seems to work well enough for me.

Hey guys. Problem. It's seems that Vista is being kind of laggy:( If I click and drag a window,... I get that smearing effect. I have 4GB of ram installed. Whats the deal? It's kind of annoying. I'm now kinda wishing I got XP 64bit instead. anything I can do to kill this lag? i have hardly anything running in the background.

Yeah I only have the one drive right now but there are three partitions on it. I was afraid that vista would install the MBR on one of the ther partitions. So what I did was delete/ recreate the partitions but I ddnt format them until Vita was completely installed.

Vista Aero engine uses your GPU to render the windows (CPU does the content of the window). In XP (or Aero Basic) everything is thrown at the CPU to render.
You video card is not powerful enough for Aero.
To render Vista/Win7 Aero smoothly: You need an Intel X3100 video card or better. Or a Geforce 6600 or better. Higher screen resolutions require a 256MB of RAM on the GPU side and more powerful video card card such as the Intel X4500HD or the Geforce 6800 GT with 256MB. Anything bellow, will make Aero run choppy (as you have).

If you have a powerful gaming video card... then we have a problem.
Ensure that your video card is properly inserted in your computer, and that it has proper power.
Also, ensure that you have the latest drivers from the GPU manufacture. (Example: EVGA Geforce 8800GT... go at Nvidia website). If that doesn't resolve the problem try the drivers from Windows update, or try the beta drivers of Nvidia website. Remember to uninstall your drivers FIRST and then install the new one.

What is your Windows Experience Index score? To view the scores:
1- Win key and then type System. Select "System" on the list.
2- Click on the "Windows Experience Index"
3- Close all applications and music player
4- Click on "update my score"
5- Once done, you will see that your up-to-date score of your system.

For my case (system on signature) I have:
    Processor: 5.0
    Memory (RAM): 5.7
    Graphics: 5.9
    Gaming graphics: 5.9
    HDD: 5.4

Everything is perfectly smooth on my system.

    Hey. Here are my Specs:

    EVGA 790i(E180) & 2 x 9800 GTX(N781),
    Q9300,
    GSKILL 4GB DDR3 1333,
    Corsair 750TX,
    SB X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro,
    Samsung Spinpoint 500GB,
    2 x Lite-On DVD Burners,
    2 x Acer 22" Wide Screens
    CM Cosmos,
    MS X5 & X6,
    BIX III Extreme,
    Laing D5,
    Swiftech Apogee GTZ & Obsidian,
    BitsPower N790NS & N79DP & Bay Res

I would like to think my rig is good enough to run Vista 64:\ This is why I hate upgrading software. I pay all this money for extra performance and then I get robbed when the software takes it from me.

Anyways,... how would I know if both video cards are running correctly other than the fact I have something on both my screens(GPU per monitor)?

I followed this list of the 9 top things to disable to increase performance and it did work but I am in fact left with nothing. Kinda. The 2 top thing being no UAC and no Aero.

I have all the latest drivers from the the manufactures. everything is running fine. It's just that its slow at times even when doing the simplest of things. Such as clicking and draggin a window. That by far has to the the worst. So annoying.

As for the list of top 9 things to disable:
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/supertweaks.htm

I'm basically left with something thats looks like Win98 etc. Which is fine by me but Aero is so nice. I would rather have the performance.

I will let you know how my PC scores when I get home from work. Thanks GB.

hey mate, my apolgies if you've already mentioned this, i havent got much time to go through the thread :)
have you run the performance test within the Vista Welcome Center?
for example, GoodBytes listed the following:

"For my case (system on signature) I have:
    Processor: 5.0
    Memory (RAM): 5.7
    Graphics: 5.9
    Gaming graphics: 5.9
    HDD: 5.4

Everything is perfectly smooth on my system."

what does it say for your system?
if you haven't run the performance test then Aero may be running on the CPU as mentioned above and being somewhat laggy... although others reading this may also wonder how aero is even active if you havent run this test first... so i'm a bit stumped :)

i would say make sure you've run the test, if you have then maybe google something along the lines of "Vista Aero Lag SLI" and see if anything comes up to help?
failing that maybe you could check the nvidia release notes for the latest drivers and see if anything is mentioned in the "known issues" about a laggy aero interface when using SLI.

just a couple of ideas to give you some avenues to explore, sorry if you've already done all of it :)
