It occurred to me that Net/Notebook memory doesn't work in the same way as desktop memory. A friend wants to upgrade the 1gb in his Netbook (I'm waiting on the make/model) to 2gb and I'm wondering if he can simply buy another 1gb stick of the same speed and type and stick it in with the existing stick? I was looking at popping in a 4gig kit on my current rig (in my sig) and from what I was told, if I bought a 4gig kit of the same ram I currently have installed, even if they are slightly different timings, they will work so long as I arrange them correctly on my board. All it will mean is both kits will run at the lower timings, Is this right?
Most netbooks I have seen only have one sodimm slot but it is just a case of popping old one out and putting in a higher capacity module. As for your second point, that is correct. All ram will run at the lower speeds. Make sure you have a 64bit o/s.
I'm not particularly sure about the netbook memory, but presumably, as long as there is a free slot, he can just get another stick providing the timings etc are compatible with the chipset. If there is only one RAM slot in his netbook, he should probs just swap the 1gb stick for a 2gb one. Yh, if you have different ram in ur pc, im pretty sure the slow down to the same timings- so ur gonna end up with 6gb in all in the form of 3x2gb? I think that might mess with the ddr2 setup and make it reli slow- just 2x2gb would probs b a safer bet.
Ahhh yeah, having never upgraded or messed with RAM in a netbook but having tinkered with a laptop it didn't occur to me that there is only one slot....durr. Thanks for the reply btw!
Thanks for the reply man, much appreciated. The setup I'll be left with will be: 2x1gig sticks and 2x2gig sticks. which I "think", if I understood correctly, will be arranged: ---------------- Slot1 - 1gig Slot2 - 2gig } Bay 1 Slot1(DDR 3) ---------------- ---------------- Slot3 - 1gig Slot4 - 2gig } Bay 2 Slot2(DDR 3) ---------------- To explain, the "slot1 (DDR 3)" and "slot 2 (DDR 3)" wont actually have a stick of DDR3 in them...they are individual DDR3 slots as my board is a crossover board.
Oh, i thought u had 1x2GB rather than 2X1GB. In this case, I think that should b fine. The NB should b able to deal with the different RAM. My advice is get the 2x2gb anyway, if the setup u just posted works, then all is well. If not, just use the 2x2GB and ebay the 2x1GB u had before. I don't think the performance difference between 4gig and 6gig is that substantial anyway.
