Just curious the 360 I've just sent back to MS due to the RRoD is a launch day unit. What do MS typically do in these repair situations? Will they replace the motherboard for the latest more reliable chipset and all that good stuff, or is it like for like using service parts? Or perhaps an entire unit swap out?

    Cheers

Prob install better HSF units and the newer clamps to hold it all down.

When I got mine back a few weeks ago they had apparently replaced the motherboard. However I have no idea whether it was like for like or if I got a newer Falcon board, I didn't have to send off the old 205W PSU but I don't know if that makes any difference (the Falcons come with 175W units).

If you got a Falcon board surely it would have to include HDMI and therefore have a different case etc? I can't recall if they said whether or not they needed the PSU with mine as my mate set up the collection and such, but I sent it anyway. Should that make a difference at all? They won't like, not send it me back will they? Hah.

There was talk of a new motherboard with the newer chipset, but without HDMI, for this very purpose.
Can't remember the name or anything but it was a while ago now that I read about it.
My mate sent his launch one back a couple of months ago and got a HDMI console with new DVD drive as well. Looked like a refurb.

Let us know what you get.

They should send you back the PSU, I didn't give them the chance as I even took off the faceplate in case they sent me a scratched one :p

My original one had a Zephyr board (old 90nm chips but with HDMI) but I don't know if it's now still a Zephyr or a Falcon. According to wiki the Opus board (65nm CPU) is being used to replace old Xenon systems (90nm/no HDMI) so you'd probably get one of those. Whether they'll send a new 175W PSU with it is totally beyond me

Edit: Having investigated a bit it seems that the different PSUs have different plugs. The 203W unit's plug fits in any console whereas the 175W plug will only fit in Falcon/Opus boards, so it seems as if an old PSU will work with a new board.

I sent my launch console back last Christmas, and I just had the mobo replaced with the same model and the replacement heat spreader (no HDMI for me). They also replaced the CD-ROM drive as there was a fault with it opening sometimes.

Ok, so it really does differ on a case by case basis it would seem. I will let you guys know exactly what I get.

Also, what is the warranty on the repaired machine? Is it like 30 days or the rest of your 3 year warranty, whichever is longer? I read somewhere it's another year, which sounds crazy. Couldn't see it on the Xbox site.

same as before, 1 year for general failure, 3 year RROD

AFAIK: in the EU all warranty replacements have the same warranty as a new unit

really? That's really good. I know that isn't the case with every manufacturer. The one I work for in particular.

    That's great to know, cheers.

Yeah Doug I have. The whole campaign kicked off good and proper when I was in the States. Had some MS guy trying to push his I'm A PC marketing material on me in Times Square. Ironically I heard that the production house that did all the material use Macs exclusively (unsurprisingly for a media house though I suppose).

Never had a problem with either of the ones I bought! The first I unwillingly had to sell, the second was an RRoD machine I bought and got replaced in-store by a friend, then that replacement got stolen. This current one is an RRoD gift from a friend who hasn't used it in 2 years!
