Got mine from ebay, don't think the previous owner registered the serial number though so maybe I was lucky. Customer services seem to be fairly willing to help though so I'm sure they would.

Well, I got my 360 back. Or, as the letter tells me, a replacement unit. Unfortunately lacking in HDMI though. Booo. But my TV does 1080p over component anyways so who cares. Just glad to be playing again!

Well, mine is nearing 2 years old now (aka not a launch unit).
The way it works here (butt end of the planet), you call up MS locally (and toll-free), they give you a reference number, which you then take to the shop, complete with your XBOX. They then replace the entire console, and get refunded for the busted one. It's also common for the shops to let you keep your HDD (due to your profile and all of that), and they normally (even if you DON'T return your HDD), let you keep the new one as well... Mate of mine is on his 4th box now, and has 4 HDD's that he got with his respective 'boxes....

i went through this a few months ago in the states, and it wasn't like this at all. maybe it's just because youre in Africa and i'm in the states.

i called 1-800-4MY-XBOX and went through call-menu-hell until i got someone living on the phone. after giving them my info they emailed me an attachment with the prepaid shipping label (the $99 covers everything, including shipping). i had to take it down to a UPS store (you'd have to pay if it's not a UPS store) and they took care of everything. I didn't have a box so it was like $4 for them to box it up too.

i will be the first to admit that RR'soD are a PITA, and they shouldn't have happened on a final product, but Microsoft does take care of them fairly competently. Hate on them for releasing defective products, but at least they fix them no questions asked (so hypothetically, if anything else broke, and you wrapped your 360 tightly in a couple towels and let it run for a few hours they would fix it)

BTW, they outright replaced mine. there were a couple scratches on the case originally that aren't there now
