OK I'm on a flight to the UK from Austria leaving this evening, and have a (relatively) huge amount of smoked salmon on me (long story). The question is: Can I bring this into the UK without being shouted at, and more importantly can I take it on hand luggage??? I've taken take away burgers / fries through security in America but never anything in Europe.

I'm gonna try taking it in hand luggage anyway, as it'll be thrown out if I don't. It's a LARGE open packet and it originated in Scotland. Gonna be the best meal ever eaten on a Ryanair flight :D

I bought some cheese from Amsterdam and brought it back into the UK no questions asked. In fact I bought in the airport so I dont think you will have any worries. Although this long story you have I hope its not a fishy tale :)

Ah nice link Suenstar :) Yes they're very much dead so I guess just counts as food. I wasn't sure if there were just some funny restrictions on fish with diseases and stuff, as I'll likely not eat it all on the plane (haha) so would be importing it into the UK, but from the EU..?

There's no restrictions on importing fish from within the EU. If the fish came from outside the EU you wouldn't be allowed.

You won't get charged import duty or VAT if it's for personal consumption or a gift. But you aren't allowed to sell it for cost price or a profit.

There is one exception to this, Surströmming.
The cans become pressurised, and if opened/burst the smell will NEVER come out of anything.

The whole thing smelt a bit fishy so we just ate the thing in the airport (plus it was quite tasty :D ), problem solved!
