Got some work done today I started by making the two casket pieces flush with each other. I used masking tape to keep them in place. Then I decided to chamfer the four corners. Will give the console a smoother touch I think. Due to some miscalculations I had to remove some material from the DC/DC regulator. I milled away about 4mm of the heatsink. I had to modify the joystick as well, to make it fit. Made a small walnut disk for the joystick shaft A small chamfer along the top/bottom corners before final sanding. Made a decorative stencil for the top and used my stain painting technique. Also stained the two inner panels. These will be adorned by gold details later on... Stencil removed, and here´s the result. Quite happy with it. It will blend in better with the finish on later. I really like this walnut veneer btw, the grains look amazing. That´s it for today! And again, sorry for the poor photos. Shaky hands and Mac products don´t cooperate that well
That is truly beautiful. It's nice to see people taking time to make something for more than just it's basic function!
The grain in the wood is gorgeous, I'd be in the same boat as cheaps, the stencil work is spot on. How do you stop the stain from running along the grain ? Witch craft me thinks
Thanks Cheap! To not make it bleed along the grains I´ve come up with a solution described further down. Thank you Pranja. I personally don´t see my projects as steampunk, but can understand the references =) Thanks you Chris It´s not magic at all... I just put a bit of thickener into the stain. But even then, it can be tricky when it comes to the actual painting. You have to apply very delicate, and only from above, never swipe. I use a small sponge brush to carefully apply the stain. I use very little color, keeping the sponge very dry.
It's quizz_kid style to me now, I don't see it as any other style other than his own retro inspired meets new awesomeness, he described it best himself as some kind of time traveling. Just awesome, unique & with excellent functionality.
Thanks Waynio. Don´t know about functionality yet though =) Update: Stencils for gold painting on the inner panels The result! It looks better than expected. The hook attached from inside And this is how it´ll work. When not in use, the joystick shaft will work as locking mechanism. Pretty simple, but I´m really proud over the solution. A black arcade balltop will be added to the shaft of course. Then I started on the push buttons. I made a simple jig for sanding them down to the right lenght. Buttons mounted in jig After sanding. Epoxy between button holding and brass ring All buttons glued And here´s that ninth button I talked about before. It´s a hidden little flat screwdriver for adjusting the friction of the hinges, securing the joystick when in use and opening the case. Proud over this one as well =) Here´s the volume dial. I had to cut it some Test mount of the volume knob. Looks amazing! =) Two-layer mesh painted in brass for the vents. Glued under pressure Then it was time for a test mount of the components. As you´ll come to see, margins are extreme here. I had to by a lot of spacers in different lenghts. Speakers amp mounted... ... with the SSD disk ontop. Not much space between them, maybe 2 mm. Had to gut it because of margins, sorry for that Kingston. Everything mounted exept the lithion battery. Again, margins are EXTREME! I may have to make a special SATA for this one And I´m really looking forward to making that VGA connector... or am I? I even had to sand the pins of the joystick to make it fit near the VIA board Just another angle Finally I had to remove some material from the case for the VIA board to fit Hmm... Memo for next build: HAVE MARGINS!!
I have a question. What kind of things could you use as connector for of some of the tiny pins on this board? I´ll need something for PWR button, etc
Been having a lot of physical issues lately, so this project is on hold for now. A two week fever followed by hospital visits including removal of appendix. Recovery for some days now, then back to business hopefully.
