What racing games, arcade & console, would you say were the great games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary. Bump N' Jump Firebird
The first real racer I ever played was Ridge Racer. Took me months to get drifting right (I was only like... dunno 7..?), worth it in the end though, no-one can hold a candle to me on Ridge. *reaches for PSP*
Man i remember having this on my psp, be for it turned in to a paper weight i could drift in to turns do a full 360 in the opposite direction i was turning with out losing much time at all, was so fun to see the car spin around like that. I'd have to say it would be a toss up between Rad Racer, and R.C. Pro-am. Those two hold lots of memories for me, siting as close as i could to the 12" television I had during the early 90's
Outrun, sega rally and ridge racer are my earlier memories. Of course wipeout for the original playstation was a great racing game albeit with a spaceship.
jesus christ, ridge racer? im surrounded by frikkin children?! Overlander was my first driving game. followed by Eliminator which wasnt really racing at all but still awesome
I used to have Eliminator on the Amiga A500+. ****ing loved that game, but couldn't ever get past Lv 2.
Hard Drivin on the Sega Megadrive. You had to use the clutch to change gear, and avoid understeer and oversteer. I thought it was brilliant.
Lotus Turbo Challenge 2: Stunts - purely for the track editor: ...and the daddy of them all, Microprose F1 Grand Prix:
I cant believe there isnt more about Lotus Esprit!!!!!!! They were the best car games of the time my Mum and Dad were adicted to it. It was the family game and great fun split screen. Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge 1, 2 + 3
In addition to those already mentioned, I used to regularly play Enduro Racer on my Spectrum and Suzuka 8 Hours one year at Butlins.
