http://www.hiphopmusic.com/archives/000759.html The shocking lyrics. Seriously... this is getting rediciolous... people dont give a s*** about these people... Imagine if that same thing happened here.. This has also offended me because I'm asian also... People these days.. I'm just pissed off now. Now those DJs are suspended.. now lets see what happens.
Yeah I read about this on BBC, pretty bad to say the least. It makes Rodney Marsh's comment trivial in comparison.
Sounds like an old fashioned publicity stunt to me. Doesn't get much more exploitative than this. The language used in the song is obviously unacceptable but as for the basis of the song - I don't really find it that offensive. If you remove the racist language and the knee-jerk reaction that causes, all you're left with is a story about the Tsunami. Obviously religious people might be offended by the characterisation of god. Being offended is the price we pay for freedom of speech and freedom of the media, I think it's a price worth paying. </devils advocate>
Whats odd is that it was played for several days before it got taken off the radio. I heard the song on Hot 97 before it got taken down and it was just stupid.
Freedom of speech and all that. Having now heard it and not just read the lyrics all i have to say is its not that bad. And to the guy that said they wouldnt have made a sept 11th song, well duh, things are always funnier when they happen to other ppl, (not that either was funny).
the song was in bad taste but if you don't like the music turn the damn radio off! when people try to punish people for saying/playing something, it limits freedom of speech, and freedoms can't be limited without being lost entirely. i understand the people getting punished by their employer though, it's their job to get people to listen to the station. you don't want to offend unless you go balls to the wall (no offense everyone, please don't sue ) like howard stern, and you wouldn't want to be like howard if Janet Jackson shows a censored titty on Nat'l TV, because you might get fired (but thats a whole 'nuther rant)
Freedom of speech should be expressed no farther than the conveyance of ideology, thought, or view; not to the extent as to intentionally humiliate or make light of the plight of others.
who makes the call? at least one person thought it was OK. and again with the no limiting without losing thing. what if the guy who wrote the song decided if it was OK? what if Jerry Falwell (AKA the whitest man alive) decided these things? the only way you can let someone decide what is OK to say and what is not without someone getting slighted is to have the most liberal person alive decide (i mean "most liberal" like "everythings OK", not the political meaning), but then the more conservative people (like you) will complain (like you are). basically, you don't listen to the country station if you don't like country, do you? i don't. i've mastered the art of turning the dial, and i wish Tipper Gore and others like her can manage it in their lifetimes. PS, K9 i don't mean any of this insultingly (is that a word?). for example, i don't mean you complain like a child, i mean you think some people should STFU, and voiced you opinion.
I f**king hate that b**ch. She is worse than lawyers. F**king PMRC. To be honest, I'm a liberal person, and if you don't like it, then turn the f**king thing off. I agree it's a bit "off color", but we need not censor everything we don't like. Everything doesn't need to be 100 percent "politically correct". F**king neocons.
I change the channel to avoid annoying ads, you can change the channel to avoid offensive jingles. I have to agree with Monster on this one.
"freedom of speech is not to protect speech we like, it's to protect the stuff we don't" - somebody .ff topic:. i want to change my name to "anynomus" and become a philosopher, imagine how much credit i can steal! .:edit:. johnny slid in before me. i wouldn't mind commercials being banned though.
I wouldn't mind commercials being banned, or at least the ones about new prescription drugs. That would eliminate about 50 percent of them right off the bat. I don't know about you, but I can't remember the last time I was shopping around for an asthma treatment or a natural viagra, or the solution to my social anxiety from a f**king commercial. It absolutely sickens me that they spend more on advertising than research and development. Back on topic...If you don't like it, don't listen to it. All you neocons out there take more time talking about the problem (while completely missing the obvious solution), than actually doing something about it. Man, we have gotten so conservative over the last couple years. Why don't we all go back to the middle ages, because that would solve a lot of s**t according to you neocons.
Don't forget people, freedom of speech is absolute EXCEPT for radio and television. The FCC has more power then people think, and orgs like the ACLU can't touch them. I can write anything I want anywhere without government rules banning me, but as soon as I speak the words then I have violated the law. I don't know what it is like for our neighbors accross the pond, but American radio sucks the lamas a**. I am in a market served by Mancow. He has to be the biggest f*** anyone has ever met. My personal view is that these jocks are causing their own demise and will be eventually replaced by sat radio or program directors(already happening in many markets). Shut up and play some musikc. No one wants to hear you inane rambling.
They have the freedom to make/play the song but we sure have the freedom to bitch about it. Offensive and sick. The fallout will be in the form of sponsors pulling out so not to be associated with them and management having to possibly fire the dj's in order to bring them back. I support their right to play it, I support their right to be fired.
god damnit u can either laff or cry. its the fact its just stupid racial preduce that gets me, its not even funny, its not like some of the other jokes doing the round, Mr Marsh's one i thought was most amusing, but thats just me, i know no one whos died in it, i think its tragic, i've even made a large donation, but i still want to be able to make light of it.
Black humour is only funny if it is done well. Anyone can make cheap fun of other people's misfortune, but that doesn't make it funny. Freedom of speech is a great thing, but as Liquid K9 says: it is supposed to protect the expression of views or opinion, not to humiliate or dehumanise others. Laughing while pointing at a beach of rotting corpses is not funny, and it is not "freedom of speech". It's that principle again: with power comes responsibility (thank you, Spiderman). Freedom of speech is a power too, one of which you do not realise its impact and value until it is taken away from you. As such it should be cherished and wielded with consideration and responsibility. It's a bit like on these forums, in fact: you can say what you want, even if it blatantly goes against everything others believe in. No-one is going to ban you for that --provided that you base it on sound argument and don't talk out of your butt, express it in a non-offensive manner and do not ridicule or insult people or incite people to violence. "Freedom of speech" is not just flapping your mouth and spouting dehumanising crap in public just because you feel like it. "Freedom of speech" is the cogent and responsible use of your right of public expression. Too many people died to protect freedom of speech, for us to abuse it just for kicks. So how do the lyrics of that song fit into that principle?
absolutely true, but obviously some people find it funny (i don't) but the same way a 6 year old comes to terms with no no's like saying the word Poo. I guess its should we be tolerant of things we find hurtful? i'd have to say yes, but i hope we could improve peoples minds enough so they didn't resort to such measures.
It'll all blow over in a few months, jus like all the 9/11 jokes, just takes time. (In no way im saying its right, but I just dont care tbh..)
