Hey my friend and I are looking into a new graphics card for the beginning of next year for school. We are aware that the prices and graphics cards will all change over the summer. He will be playing games on 2 or more monitors. Please choose which one you think is better! Thanks, Ace Here are the three we are looking at right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121247 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143128 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143080 Thanks again!
you really can't go wrong with 8800GTX at that price. do NOT go for 9800GX2, it's a complete waste of money, unless money isn't an issue what so ever.
The only problem with 9800GX2 is that SLI doesn't support multiple monitors. I don't know how this works in practice and if you can get around it, though. 8800GTX is the real waste of money from this bunch. It doesn't really out perform the $200 8800GTS so what's the point? I don't really know how well the 3870X2 works in games, but atleast it should support multiple monitors... EDIT: BTW that 9800GX2 costs here over 500 € and on new egg around 340 €, so PLEASE, don't call it expensive.. After all it works well and atleast in games I play gives a great performance boost.
8800GTX with its more memory bandwidth is the ONLY single GPU graphics card (apart from Ultra) to be able to support multi-monitor with good gaming experience. the 8800GTS is crippled at that kind of multi-monitor gaming requirement, because of its limited memory bandwidth. the other 2 are just 2 GPU stuck together, 9800Gx2 doesn't support multi-monitor, you need to mess around with it to get it working, so that's out of the question. the ATI card performs on par with 8800GTX, while 8800GTX pulls away at newer, non-driver optimised games, besides, have you see the 3870x2's minimal FPS figure for Crysis? or any other game that can output minimal FPS for that matter? the G80 core in 8800GTX is still the king with minimal enjoyable FPS
Moral of this story: never say a bad word about 8800 GTX's when wuyanxu is around. If it was me I would go for the ATI much better with multi monitors, dual core cards and ones with such a large about of ram wont come into their own untill you hit the high resolutions (over 1 or 2 monitors), also in terms of price its a winner. But I have to agree with wuyanxu the GTX is THE single card. If crysis didn't exist it would be slightly pointless though, almost like the veyron it costs tons and really all it does is go very very very fast (I know the GTX no longer does) but it was sort of a "becuase we can make this ridiculousy fast peice of engineering genius"
How are multiple screens used in games anyway? I've never figured how a second screen could help/enhance the experience.
In most games not at all. But many people do have more than one monitor for other stuff non the less, and sli plus multi monitor does not work.
got myself a 8800GTX about a month ago and absolutely love it (was upgrading from a 7900GS). And for the price, there was no way i could really go wrong (got it for 300 swiss francs, which is about $290). Just like wuyanxu and matticus stated, i'd go with the GTX. Though maybe you might want to wait for the GT200 as you're planning on getting it this summer. I believe release date is announced for july, though that's just a rumour i heard. btw, voted ^^
Thanks drdro! i am really trying to push him in that direction towards the 8800 GTX its a really good deal the best ive seen. Thanks to every else that has been voting also!!!!!! Thanks, Ace
