Because both ATI and NV sell more £25-£40 graphics cards than you can imagine. :( Just like Ebuyer sells more £20 "casecom" cases too: too people want the cheapest upgrade that works.

You are indeed correct. See this is what badly timed long winded performance reviews does to you.

I still think ATI's low end range seems a bit 'lost' this generation.

bindi, some other reviews where looking at how flash performance was effected by this card. Is this actually a feature supported within this gen and if so doesn't it add a bit more "worth" to this card?

So I can pay £38 to get good performance at low/mid resolutions, so what do I need to pay 10x to get good performance at mid/high resolutions?

Um, how exactly is comparing a GPU with it's own memory to an onboard GPU with it's own memory going to change the demand on system memory?

I would assume that the 128mb of dedicated memory isn't enough and hence calls to the main system memory would still have to be made.

Yes - check any 785G we've done to date: Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, ECS - some have sideport memory, some dont. It helps 3DMark, which is what the boxes all pimp, but in gaming it doesnt make a lick of difference. It never has done all the way back to 2005...

But you tested standard computing apps, not gaming at that part.

Aero hardware requirements list 128mb as a video card requirement, so i'd assume 128mb sideport is more than enough to cope, so no extra system memory should be needed for general computing.

IE. my original point: why compare the effect of extra system memory usage on apps between two cards that have enough onboard memory not to effect it?
The fact you noticed no performance difference just reinforces this...

    Seems a bit pointless IMHO

Testing the non-sideport variant in this case would've give useful info, but comparing discrete memory to discrete memory on 2D apps is not useful

Cyrilthefish, Crysis has good requirements too, but it still chugs for most to this day. Requirements should be taken with a spoon full of salt.

But system memory is ALWAYS assigned to the IGP, regardless of sideport and we cannot expressly ascertain whether the drivers are smart enough to determine the difference between a sideport memory address and main memory. I wouldn't say pointless, but more to the point your conclusion seems quite sound. :thumb: Few boards are now coming without sideport these days, and all of them push "performance in games" as its feature.

Why do you only talk about 720p and not 1080p (in the conclusions area)... what is the point of bluray if it's not 1080p?!?! arg I have been looking every where no one has a decent review of 1080p htpc low profile cards no frame rates to show, if it's choppy smooth... or what... guess I will just have to buy a few and try it out my self. Also how does this card compare to the GT220?
