1 hour and 30 sounds acceptable, for a full format its perfectly within reason.

However, much more concerning is the fact that you're using RAID 0, why are you using it? What are you doing that requires it, and are you aware of the risks it brings?

im aware of the risks yes.. plus its not formatting thats taking ages its the creating of the partition on the drive that is taking ages ??

The creation of the partition should be fairly quick, so it may be an issue with the controller. I would try remaking the RAID myself, see if that does anything.

Seriously though, why are you using RAID 0? Unless you're working with very large files in things like video or picture editing, chances are RAID 0 isn't benefiting you in anything but file transfer, and its not worth the risks for file transfer.

Save yourself a lot of hassle and ditch the RAID setup M8t..There is no point!

Why does everyone hate RAID systems so much? ichabod clearly told he knew the risk of the RAID 0 system, and still comments about ditching it... Geezes, THAT is the thing that annoys me... You are in command of your own system, not?

I don't see the benifits of any RAID system, and I don't use it because it isn't safe. If you want data safety, use external storage. If my pc get's busted, and 1 disk is fried, chances are very good that the other one is too. If my house burns down, data is lost...

    But, OT:

Is it a P-ATA or an S-ATA disk array?
Have you ever used the controller before, and therefor know if it's functional?

You could use a live linux distro and check if you can "see" the disk array correctly from there. Or does maybe your motherboard ship with a floppy where the RAID drivers are on (the "Press F6" thingy when the XP setup starts)?

    Fair advice from Glider.

I would also add, are you sure the drives are good?
Can you wipe, partition and format them individually?

But I would also concur with the opinion that RAID 0 is bunk in the majority of circumstances, unless you're doing something like video editing. Even then, I wouldn't touch it using an onboard controller, even if I did need it.

We don't hate RAID in general, just RAID 0 when its used incorrectly, which is is almost all of the time. Ichabod said he knew about the risks, but since he didn't display that he actually knew why he was doing it, I continued questioning him on why he was doing it. Its pointless to set up a RAID 0 array for games, and most people don't realise this, thats why its important to make sure people who are settings up RAID 0's do.

Fair enough, personally I'm a fan of RAID 5 and 6, I think they're very usefull for number of people, but only if you're willing to make a serious upfront investment.

yes ot is a sata connection and yes its the first time i have tried the ports so i dont know if its my motherboard or disk drives... it all works fine without the raid array but the boot up time is so slow! like 4-5mins for the windows logo
