After my disastrous foray into the murky underworld of Nas boxes... I'm building a server. I have a Asus K8V Deluxe board, with an old Sledghammer AMD 64 chip in it and 2GB of DDR. I have an old Lian Li PC-70 in the garage as well. All I need is a PSU, and perhaps a mouse and keyboard... I could even borrow these as I'll be running headless via VPN when it's up. The only potential problem is the lack of PCI-E on the Asus board. however... I've found this on scan. Opinions please? Will this perform well enough you reckon? It will have 3x 1.5TB WD Caviar Greens in RAID5 on it. I need a quick resolution to this, as Scan are open again on Saturday.... and I'm back at work Monday... aand then I'll never get time to get **** done. I want something up and running, or at least begun... this weekend. I'll keep one of the NAS boxes to slowly trickle a mirror over via Ghost overnight... see this thread if that makes no sense... to get up to speed with my latest mission to waste large amounts of cash on utter rubbish. [EDIT] Above rig dead... no need for PCI now.
It'll do the job u want. I am currently using an old pc as a server. The only prob I have is that the best transfer rate over a 100M network is 9.5M/s so its not quick. There is 11 drives in there and running XP. I forget the rest of the hardware but i know its got a P4 and a Gigabyte Mobo. Given the PCI speeds involved your setup probably won't be much quicker. I am gathering components for a new PC and it will have a SSD and 17x1.5 or 2 TB drives when finished.
