Hello All, Some advice is needed. I was going to get an SSD -- only to be put off by the crazy price fluctuations. So I have gone back to basics: RAID 0 with 2x Samsung F3 drives. Can anybody suggest a good RAID card? I have experimented with RAID 0 on with my onboard controller (Asus P5) -- with little success. Thanks, B
You will see no performance increase from going from a (2 HDD) RAID0 setup on the likes of the Intel ICHxR cont. to a (true) hardware SATA RAID card (i.e., one with onboard ram and processor), really only worth while when using RAID5/6 and high write values are needed... I am running 2xSamsung F1s on Asus P5K (whose onboard RAID is provided by JMicron® JMB363 PATA and SATA controller )
i use the amcc/3ware 9650se which is really great value (with latest firmware). for raid 0 you can alway try software-raid too.
The Asus P5K only has the ICH9 cont., so no RAID implementation on it which is a pity, and the jmicron controller is real rubbish... Even buying a 2 (SATA) port (true hardware) RAID card from Areca or amcc/3ware you're talking >?130, which really is a lot of money. I would be inclined, for the time being, to put your 2 x Samsung F3s on the ICH9 cont and run them as single HDDs and then when you upgrade your rig and you buy a new motherboard get one with the ICHxR cont., and then if you feel so inclined run them in RAID0 on the ICHxR controller, which will give you the same performance and any hardware SATA RAID card. You will not notice any performance gain by running 2 x F3s in RAID0 against running them as single HDDs, unless you work with large file (ie., video files, copying/moving etc) or regularly unzipping large compressed files... ________ Ocean View Condominiums Pattaya
