    Noisy Ram

Has this happened to anyone before or is it something I am doing wrong.

    2 things -

    1.

I have an ASUS P6TD Deluxe board and was running 6GB of Ram (Corsair Dominator) this was running at is proper speed timing 8-8-8-24 1600MHz

    but

When I added another 6GB of the same ram I could not start the machine with its proper timings - I had to set them to auto and they are now running at 7-7-7-20

    2.

After I installed the extra 6GB of ram each time the ram is accessed by the system you hear a very high pitched squeak. This is especially noticable when running Prime95 - constant squeak, and when running memtest each time a calculation is done you hear a squeak. Begins to sound like you are attached to a monitor when memtest is running. I have to say the squeak is getting really annoying but no errors have been found.

Any suggestions? especially to the squeak in the RAM.

    Thanks.

Have you tried the second kit of RAM alone ?
MAybe they're faulty, not in the way that they don't work, just that this sound is not supposed to happen. There is some PWM problem.

    It's probably the mouse.

    Mouse - very funny :)

When the 6Gb of ram are used individually there is not a sound.

It is only when all 6 slots are filled that you get a sound. I have also swapped the sets around to see if that makes any difference - nope

    Still getting the sound

Might be the powersupply (the memory section on the MB, I mean). I know my gainward card drives me nuts as the power supply starts loudly buzzing when ever loaded... And it just gets worse when trying to overclock :D If the squeak is anywhere near as bad as the high pitches buzz then I really feel your pain...

In response to #1, that's a common occurrence. Every IC added to a system is an extra power draw, and an extra 3 sticks of DDR3 inevitably place a larger load on the components of the motherboard that handle memory.
Unfortunately, filling all the RAM slots on a board often results in a loss of stability at tight timings and necessitates loosening up a bit and easing the strain on the board.

With regards to #2, as Jipa said above; most high-pitched squeaks and squeals from system components come from capacitors. My guess is that a capacitor on the motherboard somewhere in the power regulation path for the memory is being put under greater strain than it was before you added the extra RAM and is thus squealing audibly under strain.

That is of course assuming you've checked that the squealing isn't coming from your speakers (due to interference or a strange driver issue introduced somewhere in your changes) or anywhere else.
I wouldn't rule it out 100%, I'm no electronics guru, but I've never heard of RAM ICs themselves squealing.

Try loosening the timings on all of your RAM by a large amount and dropping the vDIMM voltage until you can get the system stable at slow settings, then see if the squealing still occurs.

Could it be due to the increased voltage output causing a component (say, a capacitor) to squeak?

So it could actually be a motherboard problem?

This was a new build so the Mobo is brand new

Brand new and otherwise fully-functional components can still exhibit problems like this, unfortunately.
That's not to say that what I suggested is definitely the case, but it's certainly possible even with new parts.

Slightly leaky capacitor on the motherboard. If it's new RMA it stating that it only makes the noise with 6 sticks so they don't just test it with 3 installed and assume it's not faulty.

yap, that would be my conclusion - as for new parts cocking up, well if they didn't we wouldn't need RMA would we now :thumb:

RMA'ing the board - just don't like the idea that there could be something wrong. The noise is now happening with 6GB (3 Sticks) of ram so something is certainly not right.

That would be consistent with a duff capacitor; the problem will only get worse. Let us know how the RMA goes.

Well eventually got to the bottom of the noise:

    What a faf -

Turns out the noise is coming from my PSU (guess what - going to RMA that)

when I have all 6 ram slots filled the PSU makes the squeak, but only if I have my 8800GT graphics card attached.

If I use a different graphics card there is no noise, or if I remove 3 of the ram sticks - very strange.

I did manage to use an old PSU with my graphics card and all 6 sticks of ram and that PSU was not making any squeaks.

The squeaky PSU is a Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 650w, I wonder if there is something wrong with the way the 8800GT is drawing power from it?

i know its a joke, but my mouse does squeek, only ever so quietly and the house has to be empty to hear it.
