Hi Guys, I've got a slightly mystical problem. I got in from work today, turned on my computer, it booted up fine, I logged in, opened the gmail notifier opened IE, checked the e-mails and then it just turned off, no bsod, nothing, just powered down, not a shut down sequence. So I turn it back on, it asks me to go into safe mode, I press enter and then it turns off again. After this I turn it back on, it gets just past the post screen and again powers down. Unforunately I had to leave to come to my mates so I haven't been able to have a good play but I can tell you the hsf is properly seated and all cables are in place. Has anyone got any idea's as to what could be causing this? It seems very strange as there has been no bsod's. The hardware being used is in my sig, it is all running stock and I have not added or changed anything in over 2 months. Thanks in advance
Could be the PSU. I had this a while ago and it turned out that there was a stray wire off one of my fans (thinner than a hair!) touching the side of the case. It eventually fried the PSU, but luckily, nothing else. Andy
Agreed, the symptoms described are pretty much Identicle to the same problem I had a while back. PSU R.I.P
Can you get into the BIOS? If you can then get in there and monitor the voltage rails and the temps to see if there's something wrong there.
I have also decided that it must be the psu after I had a good hard think about it. @ IAmATeaf: Sometimes I can get into bios if it stays on long enough, it is almost as if it is overheating because after a cold start is can last longer than when it shuts down and restarts, still defo think it's psu related Cheers for the info, I will get on to scan abd try and see what I can do abouot it.
As I was checking the psu connections today and removing bitsof hardware to do the bare minimum test, the cpu cooler fell off. I have found the culprit me thinks lol
Well, flippin eck Let us know if was that. Seems strange that there was no beeping before it shut down, to advise you of a temperature problem.
I was about to say it sounds like overheating - you got a while first time, then the problem got progressively worse until it was near-instant. Plus the instant-off stuff sounds like it's not a software problem, it's definately a hardware problem. Glad it's sorted anyway.
Aye, the confusing thing was Mother-Goose mentioned in the first post that the hsf was properly seated. To me, fingers then point to the psu - perhaps a cap holding charge for only so long.. thankfully it isn't though.
Yeh I thought it was properly seated, when i had the case laying down i gave it a good wobble and it barely moved at all, I think the thermal paste kinda stuck it down. I cleaned it all off though, wacked on some new artic silver and it seems to be doing it's job now, heart attack over.
