Hey guys, I just umm, acquired an old AMD K-6 system from work, and the chip is a K-6 550, but the mobo and case are AT format. I wanted to make a lan box out of it so I went online looking around for a new Socket 7 ATX mobo to use with it, but I keep finding Socket 7 and Super Socket 7.

Here's my question, whats the diff between these two? And which one should I buy?

    Cheers all

I should think that super socket 7 and socket 7 are basically the same. And the k6-550 will work in a super socket 7 mobo. I am running a k6-400 in a gigabyte ga-5ax for a linux server.

If I remember correctly Socket 7 was an intel thing for a pentuim upto 233 mhz(266 if u listen to some ppl) then intel went to slot 1 for the p2, but amd/cyrix etc carried on using the socket 7 but ali/sis etc had to create new chipsets to run higher than 233mhz these are known as super socket 7 mobos. They all accept 75-233mhz chips but super socket 7 go upto 500mhz + (can't remember excatly).
I think any board you would buy nowdyas are super socket 7.

Yeah thats how I understand it too, I think with Super Socket 7 you can go to 550MHz whereas with the older boards 233 was the limit.
