Cooling Really Quiet but Cool HSF

    Hey all.

I've finally had it with the noise of my Mesh (school PC) and have decied that I'm gonna swap the case, fans, HSF and PSU for much quieter versions which should also be fairly future proof, but I'm a little stuck on the CPU HSF.

I love the idea of having a Coolermaster Gemmini II with 2x fairly quiet fans (thinking these new Akasa Silend blue ones ATM) and just letting it sit there and do its job, but according to the BT review, its not actually that good at cooling, so its a complicated one.

BTW, the CPU will be for time being an AMD X2 4400+ (939) which does 2.5Ghz on the stock jobbie, so I'd want something over 2.7Ghz on the new cooler if I could...

Sound reasonable or should I look for something else?

Still can't beat the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro for price/performance. That with two quiet case fans does the jobbie.

Just how quiet are the Freezers? I'm after something I could barely hear..

The Freezer is quiet, would not say silent but it's never gonna compete with a large passive sink which is 3x more expensive.

Thermalright are quality. Put a good fan on one and you have the perfect cooling / low noise solution

Thermalright don't produce low noise cooling solutions. The Noctua UH12F is a much superior heatsink for low noise because it creates less noise through air turbulence. It will also give better temperatures than a thermalright ultra 120 when used with low speed fans, because the Noctua has a waved leading edge, to reduce air resistance and break up airflow. Because of that the noctua achieves its peak cooling performance at low airflow compared to the Ultra 120. That design is actually so efficient with low airflow, that adding a high airflow fan is actually nearly useless since temps stay almost the same.

The Noctua UH12f = Best low noise heat sink on the market bar completely passive designs.

My personal choice is the Silverstone NT06. It's the best air cooler I've come across when it comes to a full package. It's fairly easy to install, doesn't weigh 8 tons, has plenty of surface area and cools an E6600 overclocked well over the 3GHz mark without even heating up, fan running on barely above minimum. It also has the added benefit of being well-designed, so it fits in pretty much every case and on basically every motherboard.

I have tried the NT06 and the Noctua. If you want superior cooling and low noise then the Thermalright range are far better when fitted with a good fan.

    Define 'good fan'

I've never seen any review say anything but praise for the noctua. Not to mention frostytech puts its noise rating well below the thermalrights.

GuitarBizarre "Thermalright don't produce low noise cooling solutions"........................................erm they supply passive heatsinks, how quit do you require.

however, the ultra 120 extreme is the best cooling air sink around, i use one with a s-flex 1200 and its silent,i cant hear it at all, and i cool a QX6700 @3.4gig its warm but totaly stable . most people by the thermalright to have a quiet solution, as they offer great performance with quiet fans.

that said its a beast, and its hard to fit on some mbs, and its expensive

so i would recomend a freezer 64 for x2 4400+ should allow 2.7g, but will be warm but quiet

An infinity for sure. Nothing seems to beat them for the range of options you have while using them. They perform with the best of them at all levels of fan, from totaly passive right the way up to two delta-screamers.

Sorry, I should have nee more clear. I meant that the thermalright isnt a low noise solution, its made for performance. I always think of thermalright as a performance company first, since I dont always remember about the HR things.

Thermalright with a good fan like an Scythe will out-perform most other brands. I have tested quite a few over the years, even the Noctua. Still does not beat the Thermalright Ultra X.

Just read the many reviews available on the net for Heatsinks and the Thermalright is top of the bunch.

I used to have Zalman 9500LED for my core2duo e6300 @ 2.8Ghz. after switching to thermalright Ultima-90i, temp decreased by up to 8 degrees!! it's damn quieter too!! so don't waste any money on Zalman!!
