the question soi what do i go for distribution wise

i dotn want to be messign around fiddlign i jsut want it to install, talk to my windows machine & work

a am tempted by e-smiths sme file server www.e-smith.org anyone used it?

or should i stick with the standard distributions

i ama total linux n00b, installed mandrake 6 months ago & get sick of it in 5 mins so i wiped it (i am really really tempted to run windows as a server tho as you cant run the UD client under linux)

Well if you want straight out of the box servers, I'd say Debian or Redhat probably, as they provide easy installs, and good server options.

Mandrake is lilly poop. I'm surprised you lasted five minutes :hehe:

A windows server is an option, just to let you know, if you don't mind doing a little work, you cna grab WineX, or even Virtual Machine and run UD through that. VM may not be very good for doing that, as it is a tremendous strain on the system, and doesn't work all that great for everything, so WineX might be better, which is a little harder to setup.

Just what exactly do you want to run ? Web and file server probably, anything else? Mail server ?

Also do you want this machine to run as a router/firewall as well ?

Aye Slackware also has what you need, but I thought it involved a bit more work to get up and ruinning ? Which is what Sam wants to avoid. Or am I wrong ?

    u mean getting slackware installed?
    installing slack is hella-easy
samba on the other hand, requires libraries that need to be installed which arent selected in any installation (other than full or custom)

Ahh, okay. I don't have experience with Slackware, so I wasn't sure.

Yeah, Samaba is a pain in the ass.

Lisa is even more evil though. That bitch. Oh but she's so hot :baby:

Actualyl at school I was setitng up Lisa on a network, and then I went to my next class, and informed my friend that Lisa was a bitch.

I forgot he was dating a lass named Lisa. He almost crossed me.

Go with e-smith it will have most of the stuff setup that you want, and you will a little of linux along the way. Then once your comfortable with that then move to one of the other linux distros and you can set it up the way you want.

What libraries are these? Just curious so I can look out for them when I come to install Slackware (hopefully) later this evening as I'll be wanting to get SAMBA working.

If you fancy helping me out with Slackware, look here. Cheers.

I have an old Intell P II and I am going to use Red Hat Linux 9 to make a web/ftp server, so people can have websites with no ******* ads for FREE!!
