    hello guys,

i would like to have your opinion on this since it's been very long since I checked the GPU trends.

I got a Core i5 2500K 3.3Ghz with 8Gb of RAM , I currently got an ATI 4800 series card which is fairly old for my rig. Let me know of your suggestions :)

    budget: £200-300

    Thanks in advance. :thumb:

Rig wouldn't, budget would now, in which case I'd say GTX 770, but im not bang up to date on all the latest tech, but think the 770 is a pretty good card, not sure if AMD's equivalent is any better.

I recently added a 770 to my old i7 920 rig. It's quite happy running at 2560x1440 with lots of eye candy.

I've got a 770 also and its running everything I throw at it on max settings without a hiccup. If you're not that bothered maybe drop to a 760?

hmm ok lets say 770 but which model ? i got the biggest possible air cooler on my CPU and i'm afraid the GPU wont fit lol. I had to remove the heatsinks from one of the RAMs for the cooler to fit.

    Around £200 - GTX770 or R9 280x (HD7970)

    Around £300-330 - GTX780 or R9 290 (custom cooled).

At both price ranges the cards are basically interchangable if you just want to enjoy gaming. A framerate counter might give the nod to one or the other depending on the game but ultimately you are talkin 5-10% here and there (if one is unplayable the other one will be as well).

I picked up a VTX3D AMD Radeon HD 7870 Tahiti LE on Amazon for around 160 pounds

I think you can get them even cheaper now

    Cracking card

An R9 280X is the same as a HD7970 and a GTX 770 is the same (with slightly higher clocks on memory and core speeds) as a GTX 680.

If you want new, then those are the ones to go for in your budget. If you don't mind second hand, you can pick up an R9 for well within those brackets.

There are still two R9 290 GPUs in the trading area (Seb.F is the seller) for £220 a piece. Absolute BARGAIN. :D

    Edit: click here.

thanks for all the replies i was thinking about a R9 290 (mostly for Mantle support) although it will exceed my budget but what the heck ...

however i have a minor issue...my mobo is 2-3 years old which means a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot for the card, do you think something like that would hold back the performance of R9 290? Obviously it will but how much ?

There's next to no difference in performance between pcie2 and pcie3. Graphics cards just are powerful enough yet to require the extra bandwidth pcie3 provides.

if you're not going to overclock and noise isn't an issue I'd hop on the R9 290 band wagon (asus seems to be the only one keeping their **** together with these)

otherwise go with the 780. Just snagged 2 for my rig and they are fan****ingtastic

EDIT: as far as the MSI cards go, I'd stay away from the, from just about every review i've read about them, the bearings in the fans either **** completely or leak all over your components. Poor design.
