I would like to build a pc with a large RAID array consisting of 12-24 disks. I would also like to be able to fit in a full size graphics card. (No 5.25" bays will be required). Thanks
If you really want 24 disks you're probably looking at a rackmount server case. The most you can get out of a desktop tower is 16. Assuming you're talking about 3.5" drives?
I might stick to 12-13 drives? Do you have any recommendations? What about an external cage with separate power supply?
What kind of budget are you working with? Basically you can do this with anything that has 5.25" bays all along the front, you just stick some 3.5" cages in there and you're good to go. Or there's the Fractal XL, add a 4x cage to the 5.25" bays and you have room for 14 drives.
My budget is fairly flexible, but I would like to do it as cheaply as possible. I presently have a Fractal R2 with 8 drives thats why I was thinking of an external cage.
Sure you can. Backplanes, even. Of course you can always just take the side panel off and have some drives sitting on the desk/floor.
thermaltake mozart tx will hold 12 drives and a full size gfx card/cards.however there is a 2nd compartment in the back of the case you could fill with drives as well.
http://www.fractal-design.com/?view=product&category=2&prod=54 and 2x http://www.chieftec.eu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=295&Itemid=561 in the 4 5.25in bays will give you theoretical possibility of 16mounted drives 6 Hot-swap in the front and 10drives inside of the case
Oh, good old Chieftec, their cases are built like TANKS. While their internal layout might not be the most modern they ooze of quality. I wasn't sure if their older stuff is still available though.
i dont know if this is out of your price range or use in general but tought it may be of some interest for you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf2lYw5jCA8
lian li PC-343B or you could get a normal tower case and use something like http://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=48 they fit into the space of 3 5/14 drives bays, so 6 5/14 drive bays would give you 10 hard drives + whatever space inside the case for drives, prolly 6 more. you could of course get the lian li and fill it with the icy docks, that would give you 30 hard drive bays
