Hi all, Recently I've been quite sick of the number of security apps in my home network, and I am trying to find a sort of all-in-one solution with Anti-virus, Firewall, and Anti-malware (extras like defrag and backup etc would be nice too). However there doesn't seem to be a lot of them around on the market at the moment! So can you guys recommend some choices for me please. But not OneCare, Norton, or AVG. Thanks.
setup a small old machine with 2 network cards.. add something along the lines like m0n0wall or Clarkconnect get the community ed. if you really want the "set it, forget it" method. The latter has everything..
Kaspersky Internet Security. I've used it for ages and it's watertight. Anti-virus is world class of course, and the firewall is good too. There is also anti-spam, and some other stuff like Anti spyware, Registry Guard, Application Activity Analyser and a whole bunch of stuff you can run. Surprisingly enough, it's not a terrible resource hog. I ran it on an old Pentium M 1.3Ghz/512MB RAM lappy and it ran smoothly. Well worth a look in any case.
Check out Astaro - http://www.astaro.com/solutions/our_products/astaro_security_gateway It does email and web filtering. You can also download it in a pre-configured vmware virtual appliance to try out. I think its free for home users. AVG free virus protection is perfectly good in my opinion, but I personally use Sophos anti-virus as I'm covered by my work license. I can't remember the last time I had a virus alert on any of my computers. For well educated computer users like the guys on this forum anti-virus is really the last line of defence.
For a full suite I third Kaspersky. Cheapest source ATM is probably £25 at Amazon for v6 which can be upgraded to v7 free (it's £42 to buy from Kaspersky). Renewal subscription for the Suite is about £10/yr over renewal for just KAV, so I just use KAV and the free ZoneAlarm firewall, along with the router SPI firewall. There's a month's free trial, so nothing to lose, but ensure you remove every trace of the old software you've been using or it can give false impressions.
Hi all, Kaspersky sounds good! I've tried many AV solutions but never actually tried Kaspersky. Will give it a go tomorrow! Cheers. I have tried the AVG Internet Suite, but its spam filter makes Outlook very slow, and of course the "AVG has been updated... 30.... 29... 28... 27..." thing is super annoying. Used to use NOD32 but it is only AV nothing else. Using Avast + MS Defender + Vista Firewall at the moment, but Kaspersky definitely sounds ideal. Looking forward to OneCare 2.0 too. Thanks.
