So my Sky router has given up after 7 years, and Sky have told me that as so many people were getting free replacements they won't give me a free one and want £35 off me. Not bad for 7 years worth of bills.

I do however have another router (a Zyxel Prestige 662HW-61) which I would like to get up and running as it has an aerial and is an expensive bit of kit so should be much better signal.

Sky do not release the passwords to allow you to use a 3rd party router, so I was wondering if anyone knows of an ISP that does.

Also, I did try the Sky password generator site, but it only gave me a username and password, yet the Zyxel router is asking for a system password, username and another password. Does anyone know what the 3rd password should be or how to get it, or even if another ISP will be able to provide me with all of these details.

Thanks in advance for any help, and sorry for the long post.

Virgin Media if you can get it - fastest service available in the country, no caps, and I haven't encountered any major issues in the past 10 years. The Superhub isn't exactly the best router around, but you can always put it into pure modem mode and it works flawlessly with a good router.

No caps but new restrictions on the top speeds.

I would still go for it though if it's in your area, I always got a consistent 50meg when I had it.

If it's ADSL only, then take a look at Be/O2, decent service from them and I think it's unlimited usage.

There's probably a way round for your current problem, no idea what it is though...

Try cancelling it and tell them it's because the router has died, it might work.

If ADSL, IDnet or Zen are top drawer stuff -- bandwidth caps but you're paying for a quality unshaped connection.

It largely depends on your requirements and budget -- you could head over to the forums at thinkbroadband and see what they recommend. I did so when my former ISP changed to become a talktalk subsidiary and consequently became rubbish -- I've been very happy with IDnet for a few years now.

Have you tried the default router password? It might be worth a shot in the dark

We put all our employees working from home with Zen. Real people at the end of a phone line if you need to chat to them. 1-month rolling contracts and, so far, good reliability.

I'd recomend plus.net. They traffic shape (except for gaming and voip and iptv) and usage from midnight to 7am is not counted towards your bandwidth usage (or shaped).

Only ever had 2 issues, 1 was with a router (they shipped the replacement 5 minutes after I called them) and the other issue was a BT one that afected the whole town.

I'm also with plus net. I've recommended my family to them to. Just be aware they are a wholly owned (iirc) subsidiary of bt. Though they trade autonomously as far as I can tell. I've had 2 issues, one when bt screwed up in the exchange, that was fixed in 2 days. The other was when a farmer broke an overhead cable. That took a week to fix, but both occasions were out of plusnet's control. I have had issues with my dads connection both times I have found that the customer service is excellent.

I'd recommend Xilo, they're offering Be LLU at a very good price at the moment (I'm switching in a couple of weeks from their Pro 16 Cable & Wireless service). Service is top notch as a whole too!

Go with BE. Router they supply is only average but you can use your own. They have a FUp but in the last 8 years they have never enforced it with me.

before you go with anyone else, always check whats available in your area, if adsl only, check that you have llu available at your exchange, if you haven't then you will be resold a bt wholesale product, and may not get the same speeds, qos as a bt customer.

samknows website has good and fairly up to date info

In regards to virgin (who I'm with and have no issues), they will be introducing caps on data. It'll hit p2p users most who are constantly dl'ing but shouldn't affect iPlayer/ Netflix/ Steam... Or so they say.

OK, so my friend managed to get the Zyxel router up and running after hacking the Sky password, which was great.
Just tried online gaming though, and it sucked. So now looking for a new more modern and powerful router.

Any recommendations for an ADSL modem/router maybe £70 max.

    Thanks

Ugh, I'm with BT - and not happy at all. But DSL is all I can get here, and they keep pushing my BT Infinity date ahead (I've been pushed for 8 months into a later install date). I am just hoping they increase their prices so I can use that as a way out get out of the 18 month contract. But I don't hold much hope for other ISP's either- they all seem pretty terrible.

I've heard reasonable things about Zen- but it's too late now. I'm stuck either-way with my Internet turning on/off once or twice a day at random for 5-10 minute intervals. No amount of calls to BT have resolved the issue, even when they sent someone out.

I'd never go to BT, too much throttling, especially on infinity.

Yeap- that's where I am. As for throttling? Fortunately not an issue as I have a permanent VPN SSL tunnel setup and BT doesn't packet shape SSL traffic (which also gets higher priority).

But the lack of a stable connection is... unacceptable.
