Probably a bit of a weird one... but...

...anyone got any thoughts, opinions or recommendations on cookers?

If it matters... free-standing, either gas or electric, standard width [no big range type things]...

Budget of 'I can't afford it'... just need to know how much i'm liable to be looking at for something not completely terrible...

I bought a free standing cooker (bendix? something like that, leccy) scratch and dent for £230. Halogen etc. Nice little oven. Have a look for S&D you will find it much cheaper.

Make surevwhatever you buy has pot stands where you cook on top if your cooker gave more than north, south, east and west supports as you will find that the pans will very easily slideboff the mod which is very dangerous, I know as I have a scar on my foot where a frying pan slid off the hob and hit the floor.
Don't think I have explained myself very well will bung up some images when I get to my PC which will help.

    Edit.
Here is a couple of images of my hob. the first showing how large a gap in the middle of the pot stands which allow the pots to slide off with obvious results. and the second shows a guard I had to install because of this design flaw.

    Edit 2.
This link shows how pot stands should be note the extra supports at the diagonals which close the gap and stop any pot sliding to the floor.

I don't like solid plate electric hobs and would avoid like the plague. I do quite like the dual-fuel option of gas hob and electric oven or if I had to stick with all electric then modern ceramics are pretty good. Of course if I could splash the cash then an induction hob would be what I'd want but they generally cost more and might need a whole new set of pans too. In short...

    1. induction hob - electric oven
    2. gas hob - electric oven (what I used to have)
    3. ceramic hob - electric oven (what I have now)
    4. BBQ
    5. open fire
    6. warm food gently in the sun
    7. eat only raw food
    8. starve to death
    9. .?
    10. ..?
    11. ....?
    12. solid plate electric hob - electric oven
    In that order.

Preference is for gas burners, leccy oven [current is gas burners, gas oven...]... Was just seeing if anyone recommended/avoided any specific makes...

@Kronos - that hob looks basically identical to the one i have... and you're right, it's crap... None of the woks we have fit on any of the rings without falling off... And the largest pan [a 9l... i think it's technically a pasta pan] we have has fallen off the large burner at least twice [though the washing machine was partly to blame both times].

I've got a Mad Ling. She's incredibly compact and happily sita under the sink when not in use. She's also a combi so will do the washing and cleaning too.
